We all have our annoyance levels and I have given over control of the gun cabinet to Mrs MFB
  • Any chance nearby neighbour is a sort you can talk to MFB? Could neighbour raise the cockrell's perch so it's just enough height for him to sit on? He won't crow if he hasn't enough room to throw his head back to do it.

Personally, I'd not talk to the neighbours. It will get their back up or make them scared to make noise. Unless you know their speakers are against your shared wall, or something you can change.

I'd consider moving in a couple of years. Prob not the best option financially, but I would restrict it to detached (in a cheaper area), or a semi - but halls adjoining. I've lived in pretty much everything - if you can't afford detached, look for the two front doors next to each other in a semi. It's how I live now - and, yes, we hear next door, but generally only in our kitchen, hallway and bathroom. They're both musicians. I'd never buy a semi if the lounges and bedrooms were joined now. You learn to tolerate it, but noise can be very intrusive. I don't like knowing next door hear every move I make in any other type of housing! I remember wanting to sing along to Happy Birthday once through a bedroom wall lol - and that was through an old Victorian extremely thick wall!

New neighbours not even bordering our land but yes I could be getting used to the noisy fella and we are early risers anyway.

Shall lookout for the outrage on the local face group see if we can bring back village hanging. The old posts are still on the green😜

I do sympathise.  When we lived in semi rural Devon our next door neighbour got a cockerel.  We thought about complaining when he suddenly disappeared  :D.  I had a theory that some of the other neighbours got together and abducted him.

But you were in a semi-rural environment, and as the OP will find, a regularly occurring noise like a cockerel crowing will eventually become normal background;like John Deeres starting up at 05.30 in summer, and just as loud. There will always be a few who are sensitised to sounds they never heard in cities, like church bells and tractors, but most are passing annoyances. One that isn't, is a rookery. I couldn't cope with that, but I know it, so I'd not be buying anywhere near one!

Interesting you mention a rookery. We have one close by and it has never bothered us.

Some of the poshest houses are next to the rookery in a local village, so you're not alone. That's my point; knowing yourself well is probably more helpful than trying to control people, wildlife, or traffic etc nearby.
