My gripe is rude people who grab everything no matter what culture they come from.
I agree lilac_lady, and I think that's probably what diabeticguy implies too.

Yes, those people who 'park' their trollies right across the reduced section, and keep hold of the handle, so no-one else can get a look in. I seem to stand politely waiting for my turn, with others just pushing in willy-nilly. Then, when you do get a chance, people reach right across you to grab other bargains, instead of swapping places with you. Other times, I've been crouche down looking at the bottom shelf, and you go to stand up and there's someone stood right over you, so you can't stand up! Yes, drives you mad!

Having said all that I haven't got a turkey and plan on grabbing a bargain at 'last orders' later today, so not looking forward to the above later on!

  • I have just returned from my local Asda where the shelves are almost empty and all the reductions have already been done. Bags of salad 15p each and joints of Beef, Pork etc 66% off. Turkeys and Ducks are all less than half price as well. This store is due to close at 6pm.

Only the other week in my local Tesco's, the shopworker was stocking the trolley back up to take the food away. My favourite snack was right on the top so I asked her if it would it be ok for me to take it and she said yes, it's all going to be skipped now!

Surely that is the most scandalous thing to happen - destroying perfectly good food. Supermarkets could reduce items to silly low prices or even give it away to the needy or whoever wants it rather than throw it away

This happens all the time where i work. They lose money if they reduce them to much, they claim what they dont sell back its annoying chucking soooo much food away
  • My friend drives for Sainsbury's and says you would not believe the amount of perfectly good food that is thrown away. Even when it can be priced low to sell to the staff often they won't bother they just chuck it out.
  • i just had a dodgy experiance in sainsburys. i was at the bakery section, and a lady took some reduced cakes out of my trolly, and started shouting at me in italian, and accused me of taking her things!

the lady behind the counter said she was a troublemaker and i should call security, which i did, and they kept an eye on her after that incase she did it to anyone else, and gave me my cakes back.

it shook me up quite a bit tbh, as i am always polite to people who are looking for reduced items, i even pass things out to the older folks who cant get their hands on anything
  • I've just been to Tesco and Sainsburys! tesco is fab for last min bargins!

I try not to be rude about it, friendly to the staff as much as possible. I have a 2year old to feed and my job is only temporary, so don't know where money will come from when it ends in Jan.

I don't know yet if I'll still do it when i'm rich though!!
I'm getting older, and lifes getting harder!
  • I'm British, Asian and Muslim. I used to buy tonnes of stuff from the reduced section when I used to do the shopping. It meant that as a student I was able to get things that I otherwise would not have been able to afford on a student grant. It also broadened my palate, and introduced me to all sorts of exotic breads. Until recently I used to buy up large quantities of bread (especially baguette) apply home made garlic butter and freeze. Sometimes it may look as though a person is being greedy and buying more than they can consume, but to be fair you don't know what use it's going to be put to, how big their family is, or how often that particular type or brand of bread is reduced. If I go shopping I always look out for oat cakes and potato cakes in the reduced, because they are rarely there, but when they are they tend to be in large quantities. I always buy the lot, because they are usually less than a quarter price and no one is usually taking any notice of them, besides they freeze well and last a long time.

In case you're wondering why I say used to, I gave up after being racially abused by staff and other customers. The gist of what they were saying was that unlike them I didn't need to save my money for a rainy day, because I would end up flying a plane into a building or blowing myself up before that day ever came.

If that's true it is absolutely disgusting. I hope you complained to the management!

I echo that.... there are certain stores, where the staff appear to forget basic manners and customer service...

  • I used to like the Christmas Eve bargain buying frenzy at the supermarkets, but it's got to be a little bit too much like feeding time at the zoo over the last few years. Too many semi-professional grabbers have spoilt it.
I mean, who actually needs ten supersize turkeys on Christmas eve?
