I eventually got him a 4g Doro phone and put an Asda PAYG Sim in it which I topped up with £5.00. There is no requirement to make any chargeable calls but the phone must be topped up with at least £1.00 every 180 days, which I have just done for him by phoning Asda Mobile Customer Services and making the £1.00 payment by tapping my card details into my phone during the call.
No reason at all to contradict 4_Pete's_Sake 's experience/advice given but I'd be wary of the phone not allowing o/b calls after six months (even if not required at present) and shutting down after 270 days.0 -

Can "chargeable event" be an incoming call?

Can "chargeable event" be an incoming call? You don’t get charged for an incoming call (or text) so they aren’t chargeable events.====0
