I eventually got him a 4g Doro phone and put an Asda PAYG Sim in it which I topped up with £5.00. There is no requirement to make any chargeable calls but the phone must be topped up with at least £1.00 every 180 days, which I have just done for him by phoning Asda Mobile Customer Services and making the £1.00 payment by tapping my card details into my phone during the call.

Asda Mobile are infuriating, their website (and the T&Cs linked therefrom) state that a "chargeable event" must happen every 180 days and make no mention of a top-up requirement (and say the minimum top-up is £5).

No reason at all to contradict  4_Pete's_Sake 's experience/advice given but I'd be wary of the phone not allowing o/b calls after six months (even if not required at present) and shutting down after 270 days.

Can  "chargeable event" be an incoming call?

Don't think so, unless it's one of those dodgy £5 a time tipster SMS things that I'm sure it's still possible to sign up to.

You don’t get charged for an incoming call (or text) so they aren’t chargeable events.

Indeed, but the caller/texter gets charged
