We do the same with the senior railcard 😁Nebulous2 said:
We have a relatively long bus ride to the nearest big town. With free bus passes an occasional outing is a trip to town, a mid-afternoon meal, some craft beer, and a bus home again.Sarahspangles said:
I’m guessing you don’t share my plans for sewing and knitting either? Can I interest you in day drinking? I’m currently dabbling.michaels said:Just like to say, I am retiring in a month - I have no intention of ever picking up a golf club nor getting on a bicycle....
There is no obligation to eat at the same time every day, nor to have 3 meals a day. After a lifetime of routine however, it feels slightly daring. The nearest comparator is when I was a student nurse, spending days off in the pub!1 -
As a keen cyclist, I concur with this statement. Quite a while to go until retirement for me but cycling, seeing the sights, and eating cake will be a large part of it.bjorn_toby_wilde said:
My wife says cycling is just an excuse to eat cake. In the days when I was a member of a club she said pictures of Victoria Sponge and Lemon Drizzle outnumbered cycling pics 3:1 on their Facebook page.pterri said:
It’s quite true I’m afraid. I know every cafe and coffee shop for 50 miles!2 -
In our company there were two of us famous for cycling. I commuted to work, did my shopping etc all on a bike hardly ever using my car. He went out in lycra on a Sunday and went round in circles. We had nothing in common. I do so much cycling anyway that I am not attracted to cycling just for fun.3

Bikes always did use to be a means of transport - I used one exclusively for my first real job. Now it seems bikes are "just for fun". Personally I prefer a good walk, or swimming if I'm in the mood.

If you want to get back home then that generally means you go in a circleIbrahim5 said:In our company there were two of us famous for cycling. Erm….,what? Cycling as recreation is as old as the bike. Cycle racing, group rides, cycle clubs, cycle touring, bike backing. At some point an idiot will decide to organise a cycle race around France, stupid idea. Who would be interested in thatLHW99 said:Ibrahim5 said:In our company there were two of us famous for cycling. Definitely. My dad was a club cyclist and racer from about 1950 and it was also his only means of transport. They used to ride 50 or 60 miles to a meeting, get out the spanners and strip off the mudguards, saddlebag rack etc, then race, put it all back on and ride home 😂pterri said:

Something simple for me, as not a cyclist. Being able to go to the beach for a walk more, weather and daylight permitting, tide times will be more accessible, not being stuck mostly to the weekends, and it's free!MFW - 01.10.21 £63761 01.10.22 £50962 01.10.23 £39979 01.10.24 £27815. 01.01.25. £17538

Being able to just take a trip, mid week if the weather is nice. That alone is worth retiring early if you can afford it. If you’re in the South East then the Network Rail card will pay for itself very quickly, 1/3 off rail tickets for £35 a year.jennystarpepper said:Something simple for me, as not a cyclist. I got given a Ned Boulting book last year “ 1923: The Mystery of Lot 212 and a Tour de France Obsession”. Very good, & spins a lot of European history into the story.
Then got tickets for his one man show about the book - absolutely brilliant evening!
Plan for tomorrow, enjoy today!2
