So, amongst all the finance discussions....I thought I would revamp this little one - a reminder to put as much thought into WHAT you plan to do with your later years as you do to how you will fund them 😉

February was spend chilling with friends, beer & MUCH comedy - managed to see 9 shows this year at the Leicester Comedy Festival - one memorable highlight being Rob Deering, a man with VERY funny funnybones - catch him if you can!
We went to a gig last night, and I thought of this thread. Not just because gig-going is something we plan to do more of, but because the majority of the band were themselves of ‘riper years’. The venue is one I follow because they do a lot to support the grassroots of live music, and they do put on new bands. But even bands playing for beer money help keep venues open. It was possible the lowest band member:audience member ratio I’ve ever known, but everyone had a great time. Now I wish I could play something!

That bioluminescence thing sounds fascinating, do you need a dark sky environment or would a suburban back garden do?
You mention you would like to do a tour including Scotland, can I recommend Orkney to you its a wonderful place,so much to see and do and the people very much still have time for each other.

Second that.  I went to a couple of gigs this week.  One a friend of my daughter's in a small upstairs room of a pub where we were literally a metre from the band.  I was probably one of the oldest there by a couple of decades but it was great to be out listening and chatting to interesting, respectful younger people with creativity and a zest for life.  At the other gig I happened to bump into an old colleague I hadn't seen in 20 years so we had a good chat and planned a proper catch up and, since we like similar stuff, future gigs.  Just affirms how important it is to get out there.

Yup we've seen some incredibly good local bands in small venues. Some older bands but mostly younger, but playing some of the classics as well as their own stuff. Audience mostly younger people. Some really good comedy too - far better than the sanitised PC rubbish you get on TV or at big venues, raw cutting edge subversive stuff that's incredibly funny. One of the comedians looked about 16 but was probably around 20 who was very funny and I was amazed and almost shocked by the stuff he was coming out with, very funny and delivered so well. But would be immediately "cancelled" if he appeared on TV or at a big venue  :D

There does seem to be a grassroots "counterculture" movement among younger people these days rebelling against the "this is how to behave" rules they're taught at school. I'm sure they'll write about it in 50 years in the same way as the 1960's "counterculture movement".

I second Orkney as a place with interesting (and spectacular) archaeology.
Had a holiday up there years ago. There was snow on midsummer day on the way up, and we wondered how cold it would get even further north, but apart from a bit of a rough crossing the weather was brilliant. Recommend the Ring of Brodgar, the prisoner of war "painted chapel" on Lamb Holme and the Skara Brae neolithic settlement

Orkney is definitely worth a visit, we did all the above on a daytrip, parked at JoG and got a ferry and coach tour which went to all the major sites, was cheaper than taking the car across. Was really windy when we were there, think it's usually like that due to lack of trees and other natural windbreaks. Not sure if I could stay there long!
