Just like to say, I am retiring in a month - I have no intention of ever picking up a golf club nor getting on a bicycle....I think....13

We were told the lack of trees is the reason why there are so many neolithic remains. A lot of neolithic settlements in other places were built in wood, with very little signs left.zagfles said:
Orkney is definitely worth a visit, we did all the above on a daytrip, parked at JoG and got a ferry and coach tour which went to all the major sites, was cheaper than taking the car across. Was really windy when we were there, think it's usually like that due to lack of trees and other natural windbreaks. Not sure if I could stay there long!LHW99 said:Eldi_Dos said:@tinsy
You mention you would like to do a tour including Scotland, can I recommend Orkney to you its a wonderful place,so much to see and do and the people very much still have time for each other.I second Orkney as a place with interesting (and spectacular) archaeology.Had a holiday up there years ago. There was snow on midsummer day on the way up, and we wondered how cold it would get even further north, but apart from a bit of a rough crossing the weather was brilliant. Recommend the Ring of Brodgar, the prisoner of war "painted chapel" on Lamb Holme and the Skara Brae neolithic settlement
I've also seen an argument that the neolithic people on Orkney were very rich, measured by how long it takes to meet your basic needs. They could feed, clothe and heat themselves on about 2 days work a week, leaving plenty time to build large ceremonial sites, like the ring of Brodgar.6 -

That’s how my OH started out. The gang went east from here to the seaside. I’d get a message at teatime from a pub or chippy. Now it’s the same early start and the same message but they’re at Eric Morecambe’s statue which means they’ve crossed the Pennines. It is Last of the Summer Wine territory.pterri said:Fashion on the Ration

We have a relatively long bus ride to the nearest big town. With free bus passes an occasional outing is a trip to town, a mid-afternoon meal, some craft beer, and a bus home again.Sarahspangles said:

There is no obligation to eat at the same time every day, nor to have 3 meals a day. After a lifetime of routine however, it feels slightly daring. The nearest comparator is when I was a student nurse, spending days off in the pub!

Flat routes are my fave - I hate hills 🤣pterri said:
Looks a nice route 👍
Reminds me, we quite enjoyed Whitstable Pearl….although it was odd seeing Kerri Godliman acting - seen her a few times on the comedy stage at Latitude - very funny lady!
Plan for tomorrow, enjoy today!2 -
My wife says cycling is just an excuse to eat cake. In the days when I was a member of a club she said pictures of Victoria Sponge and Lemon Drizzle outnumbered cycling pics 3:1 on their Facebook page.pterri said:
It’s quite true I’m afraid. I know every cafe and coffee shop for 50 miles!2
