Could you deposit your funds into a YBS easy access account, with however many tries this takes with Santander? They do up to £100k on the phone or in Branch, and AFAIK, their branches open on Saturday mornings. Telephone banking is available 24 x7 but if you need the support of  human, it seems you'd have to call between 8am and 6pm.

Once you have your funds in the YBS easy access saver, ask YBS to move it to your mortgage.
The OP should be able to do that with one call to Santander, provided that he has done all the checking that Santander requires. Sending YBS a letter with a cheque might be easier though.

If you were able to call up ahead of times to notify banks of big deposits, then all the criminals would do it to skirt around AML rules.

Way I see it, if you're going to have to call Santander to authorise a held payment, you might as well call them up and do the transfer over the phone. No need to faff around with breaking the payment up into 2 transactions that way.

So of I make the payment over the phone will it not get blocked?

Almost certainly not - though it might take a couple of hours to make a larger payment over the phone as they will interrogate you like the Spanish Inquisition, and it might involve a call from their fraud department before the payment gets released

Registering your voice as your password beforehand should shorten some of the ckecking

Calling Santander beforehand is a waste of time. You will have to prove to their satisfaction that you are not giving money away to a scammer, otherwise they will not make the payment. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to do that.

As an existing customer, the OP could very easily set up an easy access on line account with YBS.

He could make a first payment to it (thus establishing an "existing payee" on the Santander account) and move the cash to YBS over the next week or so?

He could then telephone YBS and request a transfer from his savings account to the desired segment of the mortgage account.

Setting up a savings account with YBS is a reasonable thing to do. Sending a £1 test payment online is sensible Trying to send the £50K in bits is a bad idea. YBS is not a member of Confirmation of Payee:
Even relatively small payments will be blocked, unless you make the payment over the phone. The more payments you make, within a short period, the more worried Santander's computer will be, and the longer and tougher the next interrogation will be.

I have a Santander current account and have made payments to other current/savings accounts as existing payees without problems.

That said, it does seem that  my experience could just be a matter of luck.

This is my plan. Ive set up a payee to my mortgage account and sent £100.

Now the day before ill ring ybs to tell them of my plan to pay next day.

Then use the existing payee to make the payment and hope it doesn't get blocked. But if it does I dont mind phoning santandire in the evening when I have the time.

I have said Registering your voice as your password beforehand should shorten some of the ckecking. Which is 100% true because you skip all the questions about DOB, address, last transactions and whatever else they are asking if you have not registered your voice as your password. So it is anything but a waste of time, and also something that you can make use of again and again.

I have just seen on the Santander website that they are asking all customers to register for Voice ID before September 2023 - so the OP might already be registered anyway.
