Someone I know experienced Santander being the worst for stopping transactions. I’ve had a family member who transferred £20,000 from a Santander current account to their Lloyds Bank current account and had it stopped for checks (even though it was to the same name). Notified in advance by calling it was for the purchase of a new car although stated all they can do is leave a note which makes no difference.

I’ve made large transactions in the past with Lloyds Bank, Nationwide Building Society and first direct. All were pretty hassle free. Lloyds Bank did want to take us through a lot of security (which is a good thing), I Nationwide and first direct were hassle free when notified in advance by the fraud department and provided reason.

That is normal with Santander if you make a big new payment online. If they had made the payment over the telephone, they would have had to answer some security questions, but it would almost certainly have gone straight through.

If blocking could be avoided by notifying banks in advance, wouldn't money launderers always notify their payments in advance?

I regularly transfer large amounts from Santander - sometimes in from another account, count to ten and move it out with no problems.  Lloyds stopped a £50 transfer to one of my regular payees.  Also Lloyds will block GPay over £100 on my CC and will block further GPay and contactless payments for the rest of the day, C&P works OK.

It must all depend on what's "normal" for your account. I too have had no problem moving large sums in and out of my Santander account.

The account im using is used to pay household direct debits only. Ive never used the debit card and rarely transfer money through it.

I think ill have to attempt the payment knowing it will fail then ring santander, then call ybs back again after. Frustratingly this all has to be done between 9am and 5pm while im at work, and its very difficult to stop and allocate time for calls.

Actually I think ill call ybs the day before to say im making a payment the next day and where I want the money to go.

Then ill make the payment, call fraud team, make payment again. So hopefully just 2 calls.

Why do you need to phone YBS? Why do you want to pay by debit card? Can you do that on the YBS website? You cannot call Santander's fraud team. You can call their customer services team and they may decide to transfer you to the fraud team. Santander customer service is open 7 am to 11 pm. You should only need to call Santander once.

I need to call ybs to tell them what part of the mortgage to allocate the payment to. Otherwise they will spilt it 50/50 between the 2 parts.

Debit card or bank transfer doesnt really matter.

    Ybs phoneline is 9-5

It does not sound as though the debit card payment will be online. You would have to phone YBS 9-5 to attempt it. It will fail. You would then have to phone Santander 7-11 to remove the security flag. You would then have to phone YBS 9-5 to make the payment.
If you use faster Payments, you would phone YBS 9-5 to tell them what you want and get an account number and reference. You would then phone Santander 7-11 to make the payment. Personally, I would like to send £1 online first (that should go through without problems), but I expect that you would then have to phone YBS again to check that the £1 had arrived. The Santander call will be a long one. 30-60 minutes including wait time probably.
What about an old fashioned cheque? That should be the easiest way.
  • Could you deposit your funds into a YBS easy access account, with however many tries this takes with Santander? They do up to £100k on the phone or in Branch, and AFAIK, their branches open on Saturday mornings. Telephone banking is available 24 x7 but if you need the support of  human, it seems you'd have to call between 8am and 6pm.

Once you have your funds in the YBS easy access saver, ask YBS to move it to your mortgage.
