Preventing santandar from blocking a payment.

Im going to pay a chunk off my mortgage, just under £50k.

The payment will come from a santander current account. My prefered payment method is debit card which will need to be split into 2 due to the 25k limit.

Im pretty sure santander being santander will likely block it. Which will be a pain as my redemption figure will be going up each day the payment is delayed due accrued interest, by about £10 per day.

So is it worth me ringing and pre warning santander about the transaction and asking them not to block?

Or another option would be send all or some of the money to a less jittery bank less likely to block it? I have current accounts with numerous other banks.

Anyone got any experience?

    Debit card? Why?

Just get the sorting code and account number from your mortgage account and move the money over, am I missing something here? If this is an elaborate ploy to get some form of cashback then the tenner a day you are accruing in interest is surely wiping any benefit out. And we are assuming this type of transaction would even qualify.

Well yes ... unfortunately they blocked a £50k transfer I made to a new payee a few years ago even though I phoned and gave notice.

If I remember correctly the advice was that the security system and team have their own criteria and are not influenced by customer contact, however I think the payment was released after about an hour following the obligatory phone call.

A phone call in advance does not work from my experiences with Santander and Nationwide.

Santander may suspend the payment but ask you to call and verify why you are making it.

I am surprised a mortgage provider would accept debit card payments.

The only reason for debit card is that when paying money to ybs you have send it to their holding account and use your account number as the reference. Then you have to ring them to tell them which part of the mortgage to allocate it to.

My mortgage is split in two parts. Part 1 still has 5 years to run at a low rate and will incur ercs.

The 2nd part will be out of deal on the day I plan to repay that part it in full.

As I need to ring them anyway, I may aswell use debit card as its I dont have the worry of entering the details wrong!

Do you pay your mortgage via Santander?

If so, bank transfer shouldn't cause a problem?

Santander's daily limit for debit card payments is the MasterCard limit of £50K, according the customer services a few days ago. You cannot preauthorise. Your first attempt payment will almost certainly raise a security flag and fail. If it does, ring customer services. They will put you through to security. If you give satisfactory answers to their quiz, the security flag will be removed, and you should then be able to make the payment. Do not spit the payment in two. That will just make in more work for both you and the bank.

The debit card payment would not qualify for cashback. Paying by Faster Payments is not significantly easier. You still have to phone and pass the security quiz. If you try to do it online, you will likely get your online access blocked, which can be even more inconvenient.

Im not actually sure where I got the £25k figure from.

However this suggests its £25k for online transfers too.
