  • I had hoped to send pics but I have problems with the download.
The smart meter is an Aclara SGM1412-B
The solar meter is a Landis + Gyr Type 52358
With the first I think there is a series of readings which I cycle through of which one might be the export register.

Mine is an aclara also, I use the right hand button to cycle through, it will give total import and total export as well as import at the various tarriffs, but its pretty clear which is which from the display

  • Pics attached. I have never bothered with the controls or read-outs up to now. Guidance would be appreciated!

Yeah the orange button should cycle through.
Your first screen shows tou3, if you keep pressing the orange button you will cycle to total active import and then total export.

  • So I keep pressing the orange button till TAI and then TE appear, and ignore the blue button. Does the system then show total kWh's since the meter was installed - or does one have to set a timescale?

Total since first use, just like every other domestic energy supply meter in the UK. Unless the sticker next to the meter says otherwise, you'll be the first user and it will have started from zero.
I'm not sure it's the orange button that you should use, though; I have one of these and I think I press the blue button to cycle the display!
Try them both and see how you get on.

  • In the event the meter went through its own continuous cycle without me using either of the buttons.
    Total Active Import = 07575 (= TOU Rate 1)
    Total Active Export = 5983
    TOU Rates 2 - 4 = 0000
Export is therefore 79% of Import
That was the easy part.  >> What do I deduce from this for the SEG vs FIT decision??

That's why I should go check, rather than going by my crappy memory, you are entirely correct, it's the left (blue) button you press, not the other one.
Just confirmed on my actual meter

You need to compare the export figure with the generation figure.

Obviously will need to know the start date/start readings of both. If both meters started at zero at the same time, then it'll be nice and easy.

Otherwise you might need to work out the average annual generation and the average annual export, then compare those two figures.

Is there a sticker or label adjacent to your smart meter with the date it was installed and the details of the meter it replaced? We can use that tell how long it's been there and estimate your annual export.
    And you said previously:
Last solar reading (before yesterday) was on 28 April 2023. I have generated 2608 kWh since then.
If you're generating ~3000kWh/yr (which ties in with that, and also with your total generation for 12 years being 35-36MWh as shown on your generation meter), your smart meter must be more than two years old.
