Washing machine leaking after 2.5 years

I'm sure it is. Doubling the detergent is almost certainly causing the problem.

Is the drum supposed to get frothy with a vinegar wash?

I also don’t use fabric conditioner. Are they needed with the pods? .

Yes, unless the pod includes it.

But even then, you'll want to add some, especially in a hard water area.

A bit, but if the machine is full of soap sludge from multiple overdoses, it might take a while to clear fully.  

Does it leak any more?

No it hasn’t leaked but that 2 hour wash hasn’t been used.

I'd say that's problem solved, then.  Just make sure your lodger uses the correct dose.
