That's a really interesting question @KajiKita and I have been pondering it.
I wrote a rather negative response then scrapped that. Then I wrote a flippant response and scrapped that. The truth is this is a huge thing and we have worked ridiculously hard to achieve it. I'm proud of us.
But we'll also have to work ridiculously hard to counter the debt involved let alone be able to think about what we want our extended middle age or further years (🤞) to look like for us. This feels particularly pertinent to me as with the chronic pain condition, I don't have the ability to work and strive and earn as I would like to.
The also truth is I don't want to move away from my area and my mum. I feel resentful and so sad that it is such an impossible dream that I could afford a modest decent place in my community I grew up in.
That being said, I am absolutely not bringing negativity to our move, that is within my control and I'm sure we'll all make do as best we can and make the effort to make it well good, maybe I'll even love it.
Having said that, I am still very cross and sad (for me and everyone who was born in London who's not a high earner and can't get social housing) that we have had to have the good luck of getting this wee bit of land and then ~350k cost to get a small, dark two bed in an area that we have no ties to. I'm not ungrateful, but it ain't right.
So I guess I don't know when I'll start to feel excited. Maybe once we're in and things look alright decor and debt-wise, and mum and friends have been over a few times and it's been do-able for them, and more than three people have been able to fit in this gaff that was designed by an effing sociopath!
At the moment I'm just trying to
-have gentle sort-outs so we have as few unnecessaries as possible to find a home for in new place
-maximise our build/debt pot even one pence at a time
-remain even(ish) tempered at the constant stream of build stress that is thrown at us pretty much dailyhttps://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6466032/an-in-between-phase/p1

Thank you for your considered response to my question. Those sound like good tactics for maintaining an even mental keel through all of this.Is the house design inherently dark or is it just because it’s unfinished atm? FWIW, from my experience, spaces indoors feel COMPLETELY different once there is plaster on the walls, flooring and lighting. 😊🌞Really hoping, even though in so many ways it feels like a compromise and a hard won one at that, it becomes a home and a safe space for you in time x

But, but, have to see what's on the other side! @WelshmansDaughter 😂
It's quite dark @KajiKita as it's small, the architect did a poor job, the main living space is the ground floor, and where windows are they're surrounded by other exterior walls. However, we are trying to embrace this with decor and colour and have the downstairs feel 'plush cosy cottage' style. I'm sure we'll get used to it, and we only have to live there for three years if we don't.
