I cant use toothpaste with SLS in as it gives me terrible mouth ulcers/abcesses, and I would like to cut it out of other things esp bodywash & shampoo. Does anyone have any recomemdations?

TIA

    Hi,
we have the same problem with toothpaste,
We've tried Aloe Dent gel from Holland and Barrats £3.49 (also sometimes in Waitrose), that is all natural ingredients and a nice flavour, not too harsh. there is also a childrens strawberry version (can't remember price). Holland And Barrat do their own Aloe vera toothpaste, the packaging is almost identical, I think it is £3.29. It looks and tastes exactly the same.
Boots Expert range (I think only the enamel care one) £2.99, is quite nice, minty but not too strong.
I don't know about body washes, why not try making your own? it's not too difficult, there are plenty of sites on the web. We have made our own soap - so we know exactly what goes into it!
Or try handmade soaps you can find at fairs and markets - then you can question the producers directly.
  • I'm also trying to avoid SLS's as I have sensitive skin that is prone to irritation, and have almost managed to banish them from my daily routine.

I use Kingfisher toothpastes, all SLS free, about £2.50 a tube and available in most health food shops, come in all sorts of flavours and often have the choice of having it with or without floride. I'm using the aloe vera, tea tree and mint at the moment, it's just like regular toothpaste but with less foam.

And there's loads of showergels out there too, Jason do huge 900ml bottles, about £6.50, mine has lasted me months. Faith in Nature also have a great selection and I have yet to try out their showergels but weleda have a great range too, smell lovely. Again, these can be found in most health shops. So far I haven't noticed any difference in the look, feel or effectiveness in sls-free products apart from my skin feels awhole lot better and rarely feels irritated now.:T

Scroll down to find lots of products that don't contain sls or parabens.
Can also recommend Green People products as Jammygal says. I've used their hair products.:D x

Can also recommend Faith in nature. They also do bubble baths. Also Liz Earle's shower wash/bath foam. If you're at a local health shop ask if they can get you any of these items, often don't stock them as they don't have the space.

Also you need to be savvy as some supermarkets have brought out 'natural' ranges which include SLS. Apparently SLS was developed in the 1950s to strip oil from engines. Don't know if it's true but heard it from several programmes. Scary! Either way, it's worth minimising exposure as much as possible especially if suffer from eczema/skin conditions.

I also use Faith in Nature shampoos and bath foam/shower gel and love it. It is like herbal essences but nicer and obviously no nasties.

Have looked at my Lush products and all have SLS in apart from bath bombs. How rubbish is that and don't get me started on Body Shop

  • Dr Bronners (sls free) liquid soaps are good too and are concentrated so a little goes a long way. The peppermint one is good.

I haven't tried it (just bought it for an xmas pressie for someone) but Waitrose do an organic body wash and lotion - had a quick squiz at the ingredients and seemed okay - don't remember seeing any dodgy awful chemicals in there and seemed fairly reasonably priced - sorry can't remember how much.
    Hope that's helpful.

I often get really itchy skin and thought I'd try an sls free shampoo from Holland and barrett - Australian teatree one for £4.59 and an sls free olive oil soap (79p - though I'm not too sure about the smell of that yet!!). Then I looked at the ingredients for the aldi moisturising soap (69p for a 4 pack) and that is also sls free.
