There were discussions about compulsory ID cards but the civil liberties mob kicked off about it.

Has anyone here applied for a passport when you just wanted it for photo ID, but not travelling abroad?
Yes, I have. I can't remember if I was specifically asked that question, I think it may have been raised, and if so I would have said that that was why I needed it.

Note that If it is your first adult passport then you need to attend an interview - I applied for mine during lockdown and this was carried out over a smartphone using Skype, but they may now be back to requireing a face-to-face interview as they did before Covid.

As above, requesting a passport needs no reason to be given.
Not on the application form, but for a first time application you also need to have an interview, and it may be asked then.

Not everyone (in fact very few people) will need an interview when applying for the first time so that statement is misleading at best and at worst totally false.

In any case am interview is only to establish identity of the applicant and not why they require a passport.

Even if they did, you would surely just say "I'm planning to go on holiday" or "I may need to travel at short notice"

A lot of people over thinking this, including the OP

They dropped the compulsory interview for everyone getting their first british passport ages ago @p00hsticks

I remember when the Mrs had her interview a FOI had been done shortly before and it revealed that in the 2-3 years it had been running only 4 people had failed the interviews however the HO was claiming it had stopped thousands of false applications because fraudsters were put off applying because of the interview.

Knowing the questions she was asked, and what others posted online, it was a 100% body language assessment as they were things like "which supermarket do you use and describe your route to it from home". Now unless they are tracking us much more than we know they wont know if Tesco, Coop, Waitrose, Asda etc is the right answer nor if you say you catch the bus, walk through the estate, drive etc is true.

    @DullGreyGuy That's interesting.

I did get interviewed for mine (via Skype as it was during lockdown), despite having previously held a (long-expired) UK passport, and having passed DBS security checks just a few years previously while working for the Civil Service!

I wasn't asked which supermarket I used, but I was asked where I went walking and to describe how I would get to it from home. I think the interviewer may have been using google maps with my nominated address set up on it and was using it to confirm that I was actually familiar with the area I had said I was living in - I imagine it would catch out anyone who was simply giving some sort of random accommodation address.

I also got the impression that they had asked the previous work manager that I had nominated as someone to confirm my identity some questions about what work we had carried out together as they asked about that and I susect were checking that our answers matched.

Hers was face to face and the person wasnt typing away to bring up Google Maps etc... obviously could have been recorded and someone checked afterwards but doubt it. She technically also got some questions wrong... when asked where I worked she said I worked for a previous client (not good from an IR35 perspective ;) ), said she had a credit card account that she'd closed down ages ago and instead had a secondary cardholder card on my account with the same provider. Plus there was something she said she couldnt remember but that was just stress of what seemed like a formal interview even though the questions were daft.

Her references werent ever contacted either though she was asked to describe one of them

    After you apply

    Passport interviews

After you apply, you may need to be interviewed to confirm your identity.

If you need an interview, you’ll be contacted after your application has been processed to book it. Video interviews are taking place online.

I'd assumed (or was told ? I can;t recall now) that they were recording the interview and would review and double check the information I'd provided afterwards.

I don't remember ever having one - and they were voluntary I think ?
Yes. They were rolled out by area. Got as far as Liverpool before the Tories got in and scrapped them.  They cost £30.
