I've just bought a Sony radio as mentioned in the first reply, I can confirm it's really good, nice and small and, from the reviews I've read, it lasts about 15 hours before needing to be recharged. Great for Radio 4, possibly not so good for music as it's only a small speaker but it's a quality item.

It looks really good - I've never read so many long, detailed, positive reviews for an Amazon item!

You won't be so keen when the slider switch fails as it undoubtedly will sooner or later.  Both the visible plastic slider and the movable element on the switch itself are hopelessly weak and hair thin.
Only a matter of time before it becomes a very expensive brick.  If it's out of guarantee there will be nothing you can do except send it for recycling.  Sony won't want to know.
It's also missing Bluetooth, unlike the Majority Eddington, which is what the Sony should have been.

We have 2 Pure Mini radios and have been using them for a number of years without any issues. Size is like a paperback but square.  Dab & FM at an easy press of a button and easy to switch between Dab & Fm as well.  Presets available so you can switch stations easily.  Don't know about the group station thingme you mentioned.

Someone (who will remain nameless) managed to snap the telescopic aerial on one of them but this hasn't effected it's ability to pull a signal.

Best part is that you can use them with batteries, plugged in or (our choice) with a rechargable battery in them that recharges when you plug in the radio as normal.  When we bought them the radios themselves were about £50 but the batter was another £25 so that might put them out of your price range.

I'm treating the slider switch with great respect!
  • Hello, as you are registered blind, you might be able to get a free dab radio from British Wireless for the Blind. Search for them on Google.
(I'd post the link for you but as its my first post I'm not allowed links.)

    Hope that helps

    hey all,
    thank you for your help.
i've thought of going with the roberts play 10 dab.
I am not requireing bluetooth currently, I do have other devices that fill in that function.
    mainly, bluetooth speakers.
I don't own a mobile device of my own such as a phone.

I strongly believe, that having a device that does one thing to the exclusion of others is better that one that does allmost everything under the son, it means that the components are simplifyed, and would be less prone for error.
I could be talking a load of ***, doo tell me otherwize.
I am subscribed to the wireless for the blind fund,
and have one of there big radios. contains a cd player tape etc?
had it for a fare few years now.
thank you again for your help.
doo tell me if the choise i've made is wize.
i've got till near the end of september, it's when my birthday falls.

If thats your choice, buy from a place where they will have it back. Have had many Roberts DAB they all vary in Sensitivity to the extent my old 2001 radio can get 60 odd stations, several newer clock radios cant get a single station same with Pure stuff. My pocket Cowan D2 receives 60 odd DAB again.

Shame you dont have a mobile, so easy to get Internet Radio use with bluetooth speakers job done and not limited to a pultry few stations left on DAB.
  • hi,
I was also minded to go with the roberts play 10 due to a fello poster who performed sensitivity tests with several radios, with his own money and his own time.
I would like to thank him for doing this.
the poster's name is Gareth Hart
I asked you fine fokes for your thoughts incase things may have changed since his report.
I am very greatful for all of your assistence.
    how ever,
sir hareng, have you ever used the roberts play 10?
I do own the roberts sports dab 5 radio which does not have a speaker.
reception on that is not bad but I have that for emergency situations.
doo you ecoh my thoughts on the sports dab5?
