Splendid! Thank you so much - my grasp on 'what the camel stores where' was far hazier.
I shall now go back to leaving a few sketches & measurements left where they will terrify The Young.(They thought I was Utterly Bonkers for having a military packsaddle tree at all, let alone before the riding school opened, and over the years as Himself acquired webbing from military fairs, I acquired sundry bits of leather. With The Decluttering, today much migrates into the hands of a collector who is also a respected author & I am promised a mention in the dedication. Quite as much Fame as my sons can live with!) They think with the departure of the leather, it's all over.)
They don't realise I still have the books...
(And am muttering that I cannot leave Thanks and Intesting!)

Dig - I am now completely convinced that you live in a workshop that smells faintly of leather, old books and tea, and occasionally mutter “The Young know nothing of packsaddles,”
You’ve made my morning 🥰9 -
Dig, if you look at old photos of camel trains it's a wooden cross style box frame and ropes, and I would guess it's the ropes that's important as it can be adjusted as the body shape changes during the trip.

@boultdj, I like the look of the camel train here just instead of chaff, mine will be books. The Army book I have does have a bit of padding shaped under the wood as well as diagrams this shape front, this shape back - it is going to give The Young utter nightmares, until they realise I am pulling their legs (mostly) & to stop nagging at me to declutter.
I'm not quite a hoarder (it doesn't count with books, does it?) but ye gods as a household we are inheritors. So my lads are after moving me into something smaller (& easier to heat) that will mean the eventual death cleaning is quite a lot simpler. For them, then. For me, now, it's all rather more difficult. If the idea that with ADHD some of your memories are tied to actual physical things is right, they want me to lobotomise myself. Also, most of the Weaving Shed contents were Himself's wicket so I can barely tell a swan necked chisel from from a jewellers hammer, but while he was alive we didn't need to label things as He Knew… Dump it on a house clearance wallah? It's like emptying out Aunt Mary's costume jewellery box knowing there are a few serious family rocks there. I haven't the right.a workshop that smells faintly of leather, old books and tea
@New_in_the_fens, well, more like a house than a workshop, but the weaving shed floor includes several sorts of oil (tung, Danish, boiled linseed just that I can read the labels for), Lots of books (my sons are getting Not Quite Hysterical), leather, wool (where do you sell vintage Witney blankets in good condition these days?), Certainly Tea but also a few boxes of sachets of the coffees you are expected to pay at least £3 a cup for in the city (so I carry an assortment & coax my fellow Scout leaders therewith) & then the (small) pool table & tissue & balsa, several Tilley lanterns & the sort of lamp that has a woven tape wick. The power tools are steadily migrating to a son's workshop which he has built to receive same. Tell you, when the electricity goes off, we do not stop doing much - Roman oil lamps, medieval tallow rushlights, beeswax candles, Tilley & Vapalux lanterns & a couple of hand cranked LED lanterns - it's finding someone moved the matches (or flint & steel, or zippos) that really causes the air to turn blue.
And the young Don't know much about packtrails or packsaddles. Poor things. Mine just knew they had to shift the packsaddle tree out of the way to put up the Christmas tree…

I'm intrigued. Do you know something we don't? 😁
Sorry I can't help load the camel but I would suggest that a thirsty animal could be more intractable that a replenished one and in any case, it's kinder to keep it watered.

No books are not hording, they are essential memory back up, along with cups of tea and wool with assorted needles and hooks, at least in my home.

@Cherryfudge I really wouldn't phrase it that way! Just being a variant on Luddite, I do not trust the internet to have Every Book (and anyway I like ones I can bite) & besides that, we have several that don't have ISBNs as they are War Office printing for the military, civilians emphatically not for the use of. (Wonderful what drops into the 'wrong' hands when a TA unit is clearing a hall.) The packsaddlery book I got to understand the context of the saddle tree I'd acquired, only it Has Several More packsaddles for other animals.
Really, the combustion engine is but a blip in our history of shifting stuff from A to B.8 -
One enormous advantage of old books is that you know they can't be AI. Of course, that doesn't mean I'd follow medical advice from one, though I might read it out of interest.
Witney blankets - are an investment. Search on 3bay and you'll see what I mean.

@DigForVictory - We estimate we have about 3500 books here - if not more. And you are right, many of the most important information is contained in the older books. I have been collecting books on the Home Front in World War II - might come in handy for the next one. I have about 1200 books and 400 magazines plus in this collection. Been cutting back on my mystery collection to my favorite authors and giving away most of the rest. But what would I do if I am stuck at home with no one to get me books and the power was out. Terrifying thought.

@DigforVictory
Have you heard of a charity called TWAM (Tools With A Mission)?
They take old tools and sewing machines and fix them up to teach folks a trade and set them up in business. Mostly in Africa I think. They took quite a lot from us when we had a sort out.
