I was looking for cheap/free sources of water containers.

Are plastic milk bottles any good if I can find someone who is throwing godmother away.

I used long life milk in tetra pack so no good there

I really wouldn't - the plastic is designed to degrade, as it's not a multi-use item & it's a complete fiend to clean the milk fats out so you contaminate the water. You're safer with empty winebox bags. Even then residual wine flavours can linger, and reused food-grade plastics may degrade or leak over extended periods (typically best limited to short-term emergency or non-drinking uses like flushing or washing)…
