Private number plates - narc or normal? :-)

People have numberplates that mean something to them, I have no strong feelings one way or the other. People mess with their numberplates to make them look like something else, makes me really REALLY cross. What do I think this says about them - they think one law doesn't apply to them, so what other laws do they think they can pick and choose whether they comply? Either they have a spare numberplate for when the car goes for its MOT or they know a dodgy garage. What other things does that dodgy garage turn a blind eye to?
"But I'm not going to rob a bank". So you think the law only applies to people who are going to break it? How are the police supposed to know "oh OK, that's a good law abiding person, we don't need to worry about that one"
"But it makes it more memorable" OK, how do you feel about the idea that if you mess with a numberplate there could be more than one that reads the same? BIG TOM. Is that B16TOM or B19TOM? It might be memorable, but it doesn't tell anyone for sure what your actual numberplate is. Including speed cameras. Oh, so you don't want to be held accountable if you do break a law? Just the ones that you think are important, like robbing banks?
Or if someone who's faked up their numberplate so it looks just like yours gets mistaken for you when they break a law?
So, lacking in intelligence as well as arrogant.2 -
It does surprise me when such obvious abuses are seemingly not picked up. Any cop wanting to 'up' their catch rate should have an easy time

I used to work with a guy who had a number plate that pretty much spelled his name - if the spacing was adjusted. He said he had a spare set of plates with the correct spacing, he'd put these on when it went for an MOT, then swap them back again as soon as it was done. But yes, I agree with you, surely it must be an easy way to bring in some revenue if the cops just pulled over every car that had an illegally-spaced numberplate and issue an on-the-spot fine.0

Local authority near me had a ride on grass cutter a good few years ago, registration no wasFAT 80Y read FAT BOYDon't think you can transfer to another vehicleHad the chance many years ago for a songYRK 5 read YRKS, live in Yorkshire always regret not buying it0

I understood any registration could be transferred to retention or to another vehicle, subject to the age limitations on the vehicle being "newer" than the plate.SteveJW said:Don't think you can transfer to another vehicle
I've always thought, if I were ever to get a PP, then I'd go for Wife's Initial - My Name - Last Initial.CliveOfIndia said:I used to work with a guy who had a number plate that pretty much spelled his name - if the spacing was adjusted.
It is available for £1k and, the beauty of it, is the standard format works no need to adjust spacing etc, so I'd know, and people who know me would know, but it would not be obviously showy or likely to attract the wrong kind of attention.
I like the subtlety of it.
I don't have a car new enough to have the plate though.
I could also get My Name - Last Initial.
Also available for £5k but uses a standard format of an older style plate. But it would be more obvious that it is a PP so loses the subtlety.0 -
Ciao can also be Goodbye (equivalent to Cheerio or See ya!) so possibly a message from the backplate as it speeds away at the lights. Should be on an Abarth rather than something French....Or possibly the owner is Italian and PAL are their initials.ontheroad1970 said:

On a modified Clio or Pug or something.
On the one hand it took a few seconds thinking to work it out (so it ought to be naff), but on the other hand once it became clear, I realised it was genius.I need to think of something new here...2 -
Obviously I got it, and didn't spend a long time trying to work it out. But I still appreciate you being the one to put your hand up, for all of the others, who unlike me, also didn't get it.ThisIsWeird said:

Or it could be someone deeply upset by the withdrawal of the Phase Alternating Line system for analogue colour broadcasting.NBLondon said:

I think I know what you are saying... :-)

I just saw a car advertised for sale online and the number plate reads N AFF
That would be a good reason to get a PP.1
