Savings/investment DDs and debit card deposits- An updated list

Welcome to this thread. I have decided to create this thread to provide a regularly updated list of savings and investment accounts that can be paid into by direct debit and/or debit card for the purposes of satisfying the various bank switching offers and reward accounts that are available.

This thread is intended to be a continuation of the existing Savings accounts accepting DD's thread with the addition of savings accounts that let you make deposits by debit card.

Feel free to use this thread to discuss any of the items on this list and if there are any DDs/accounts that I have missed please mention these in this thread and tag me @Bridlington1 or send me a direct message so I can add them to the list. 

I have divided up the information here into 6 sections as follows:

I have included a brief summary of the terms and conditions of each account and where possible I have included links to each of the accounts on this list. I shall not be maintaining lists of items marked as "DYOR", such as charities, credit cards etc.

I have also made reference any refer a friend/sign up offers that any of the items on the list are offering as a remark. I have chosen to do this because I feel they may be of benefit to anyone who knows someone outside of this forum who could refer them/be referred by them. I must stress that this thread must NOT be used to request/exchange referral links or personal details. This also applies to private messages.

Note you can read the above paragraph to mean that I am NOT willing to refer anyone to any of the items mentioned on this thread via private message. Anyone who makes such a request is wasting their time.

Remarks: In order to set up a direct debit you must fill in a direct debit mandate form.

M&S Cash ISA (variable rate option):

Interest rate: 3% AER (variable)

Minimum initial deposit: £1

Direct debit amount: £1 min

Multiple monthly DDs: No

Direct debit date: 4th of each month

Account opening: By post, telephone or online

Management: By post or telephone

Sole/joint: Can be opened in sole name only but deposits can be made from a joint account

Remarks: Must fill in direct debit mandate form, which must be sent to M&S bank along with a cheque for the first month's deposit. The cheque must be from the same account that you've set up the DD on. Minimum withdrawal amount £10. ISA is not flexible.

Moneybox Simple Saver:

Interest rate: 4% AER (variable)

Weekly direct debit amount: £2 minimum

Multiple Weekly DDs: No

Direct debit date: First working day of each week

Account opening: App

Management: App

Sole/joint: Can be opened in sole name only but deposits can be made from a joint account

Remarks: Also offer a 32, 45, 90 and 120 notice account but you can only make 1 weekly DD into Moneybox which can be split between these accounts as you wish. Only 1 withdrawal permitted per calendar month. For those who have the Simple Saver powered by Shawbrook, the latest increase from 3% to 4% has not been automatically applied, in order to get the new rate of 4% you will need to switch to the Simple Saver powered by Santander International, which can be done in the app by going to Settings>Accounts>Simple Saver and choosing the version powered by Santander International (it took me about 20 seconds). 

Plum:

Interest rate: 4% AER variable (plum basic)

Weekly direct debit amount: £1 minimum

Direct debit date: Wednesday

Multiple monthly DDs: Yes but only from one linked account

Account opening: App

Management: App

Sole/joint: Can be opened in sole name only and all DDs must come from a sole account

Remarks: Can link multiple accounts but you must select one account only for DDs to come out of. Have previously offered a sign up offer in which you would be given £15 for signing up before 23:59 on 17/1/24 and having £100 in the account 90 days after opening so if you ae thinking of using this it may be worth waiting for a sign up offer to emerge.

Post office Easy Access Cash ISA:

Interest rate: 3.8% gross variable (includes fixed 2.25% bonus for 12 months)

Monthly direct debit amount: £10 minimum

Multiple monthly DDs: No

Direct debit date: Your choice

Account opening: By post or branch

Management: By post or branch or telephone

Sole/joint: Can be opened in sole name only but DDs can be taken from a joint account.

Remarks: Account is not flexible. Minimum initial deposit £100

Scottish Widows E-Cash ISA 3:

Interest rate: 1.55% AER (variable)

Direct debit: £10 minimum

Multiple monthly DDs: Yes but only from nominated account

Direct debit date: Your choice

Sole/joint: Can be opened in sole name only but deposits can be made from a joint account

Remarks: Minimum withdrawal amount is £100. I've found the balance can be reduced to £1 once opened. Account can be managed online once opened. ISA is flexible.

AJ Bell Dealing account:

Multiple monthly DDs: Only one DD may be paid into each dealing account per month but you may hold multiple dealing accounts simultaneously.

Remarks: All deposits must come from your nominated account and you may only hold one nominated account irrespective of how many dealing accounts you open. They also do a stocks and shares ISA with the same DD conditions.

The Big Exchange:

Multiple monthly DDs: Only one DD may be paid into each account per month, however you may open multiple GIAs and deposit into each once per month. All deposits must come from your nominated account and you may only hold one nominated account irrespective of how many accounts you open.

Sole/joint: Can be opened in sole name only and all DDs must come from a sole account.

Remarks: Have been known to offer a 2% cashback offer (NLA) if you transfer a GIA, ISA or JISA to them. 

Freetrade GIA:

Multiple monthly DDs: One per account but you may open multiple GIAs and set up a DD to each.

Remarks: All DDs must come from your linked account and you may only have one linked account irrespective of how many GIAs you open. Currently offer a refer a friend offer in which both you and your friend will receive a free share between £10 and £100 for depositing £50+. Have previously offered a slightly more generous refer a friend offer in which both you and your friend received a free share between £10 and £100 for depositing £10+ (ended 2/8/23). Hargreaves Lansdown:

Direct debit: £25 minimum, though can be set to £0 in order to temporarily suspend the DD.

Multiple DDs: Only one per product but you can have multiple products.

Direct debit date: 7th of the month

Sole/joint: Can be opened in sole or joint names, though joint accounts must be opened by post

Remarks: You may only hold one nominated account for DDs at any one time and all DDs must come from this nominated account. Your nominated account for DDs does not need to be the same account as your nominated account for withdrawals. You may change the total DD between 10th and 21st of the month and investment choices between 10th and 7th.

Interactive investor:

Direct debit: £25 minimum

Multiple monthly DDs: Only one per account but you can open multiple trading accounts.

Direct debit date: 12th of the month

Account opening: Online

Management: Online or app

Sole/joint: Can be opened in sole name, it is unclear whether joint accounts are allowed or if DDs can be linked to joint accounts. I shall update this post one I have further information.

Remarks: Available in their trading account, S&S ISA, JISA and SIPP. Comes with monthly fee of £4.99+ (depending on which plan you have) to have these accounts so probably best not to open this account solely for the direct debit. All DDs must come from the same nominated account irrespective of how many trading accounts you open.

Invest Engine:

Multiple monthly DDs: Only 1 DD may be paid into each general account per month but you may open multiple general accounts and deposit into each once per month.

Remarks: Money can be held as cash do doesn't need to be invested. Vanguard have been known to combine DDs that are due to go out on the same day so make sure the DDs are spread out sufficiently if using this to satisfy reward account DDs. All deposits must be made from your nominated account and you may only hold one nominated account. There have been reports of people not needing to make a £500 initial deposit.

Wealthify GIA:

Remarks: They have been known to do sign up offers (NLA) in which you will receive £75 for investing £75 or more for a year and other offers in which you will receive £50 for investing £50 for a year. Currently have a refer a friend offer in which both the referrer and referee will receive a free £50 investment if the referee invests £250 for 3+ months. Remarks: Standard GIA and ISA both charge a £1 monthly fee. All DDs must be taken from your nominated account and you may only hold one nominated account irrespective of how many accounts you hold. Round ups and auto invest are taken as two separate DDs, but if the round ups total is less than £10 the round up will not be taken that month and the total accumulated will instead be added to the following month's round up total until £10 is reached. Wombat invest currently offer a £10 welcome bonus for opening an account with them (no initial deposit required, £10 does count towards your ISA allowance if you choose the ISA option). They also do a refer-a-friend offer in which both you and your referred friend both get £10 with can be claimed instead of the welcome bonus. Note both of these offers are available with their Instant plan (free) and the bonus must be invested for 90 days before you can withdraw the money. Remarks: Debit card deposits can be made in branch only. Currently offer a Loyalty rewards scheme in which both you and the person you are referring will get a £10 love2shop voucher if the person you refer opens a savings account and £100 if they take out and complete a mortgage with them. There is a form which can be filled out by the referrer including their name & account number and the referee's name & account number to be able to get the reward, which can be obtained in branch or by requesting they post a form out to you. In practice I've found this isn't necessary if the person being referred includes a note with their application form saying that they're being referred and including the referrer's full name and account number. Note do NOT use this thread to request/exchange referral links/personal details.

Remarks: ISA is not flexible. Deposits can be made online or by telephone. Debit card deposits are processed manually and online deposits may take up to 5 working days to be debited from your debit card (my £1 test deposit was debited from my current account the next day though). Each deposit will result in you being sent a paper certificate of deposit, a copy of the summary boxes for both the fixed and variable rate ISA options and a FSCS sheet so unless you wish to receive rather a lot of post, M&S isn't very good to use for lots of small repetitive debit card deposits IMHO.

Remarks: Deposits may be made in branch or over the phone. Rather annoyingly their regular saver can not be funded by debit card.

Virgin Money (initial deposit only):

Remarks: Deposits can only be made online.

I seem to remember the minimum DD for Charity Bank being £10, although to be honest I've just searched for it in their assorted terms and cannot find any mention of a minimum, it doesn't say a minimum on their DD form either.
Despite that I can say I've been happily depositing only £10 a month via DD to the 33 day notice account for some time, maybe it could be set for a smaller amount but as it's a savings account I'm happy to leave it at that.

Charity bank direct debit date is fixed at 10th of the month.  From the DD form:

Charity Bank offers a claim date of the 10th of each month only. If you require a different date, please set up a standing order from your nominated account

Just a heads up to anyone thinking of using Scottish Widows Internet Saver.
Whilst it is a DD to a savings account and will work for rewards/etc, it is painfully slow to set up and about as basic online functionality as you can get. Think of this as a long term direct debit on an account you're not going to change.


Oh, and thanks a lot @Bridlington1 for taking this on, the old one was now somewhat out of date. 
Good to see the addition of debit card deposits to the list too.

Thanks for this, will be very useful.

Can you add Family Building Society to your list of Savings Accounts that let you pay in by debit card.  I've found them to be useful for spreading debit card deposits around rather than just using Skipton and potentially annoying them.
