Debt card used at 6am on bus, not by us, bank no help?
My wife had a transaction pop onto her phone last night. Her card had been used on a bus (tap on tap off) at 6am last Monday, the bank holiday.
We were both in bed at that time and the card was in her bag.
She called the bank and was told that as the token was the same as the card, it had to have been someone using that card. They wouldn't hear anything past that, saying that if we hadn't used it, then someone else in the house must have had access and used. There is no one else in the house.
They have cancelled the card, but they're not going to look any further into it.
Is there any point pushing this with them? It's not a lot of money, but I found their attitude very negative to say the least…

DId your wife use any bus prior to this alert?
It can take time for the transactions to be processed. So you may board the bus on Monday, but the pyament would not process until Tuesday or Wendesday, or longer if it't not a working day.
Who is the bank?
For little amounts I doubt it's worth it. Just get a new card.

You're confident that nobody had access to the card, and were both in bed - so there has to be another explanation. They aren't interested in helping. At a time like this I might consider opening a new bank account and taking my business elsewhere (Using one of the switch deals that gave me some free cash while I was at it).

She has never used the card with that bus company, it doesn't even run near us. She uses the local buses once a week, but she uses their app and that shows on her statement as a completely different type of transaction and as the local bus company. And has never used any of her cards to 'tap on and off'.
The bank is Halifax.

HSBC is currently offering £200 to switch to them.
Natwest and RBS also.
Might be worth looking into :)

Could her card have somehow been cloned/skimmed at a previous occaision? Any funny looking things around the card slots of ATMs? Also maybe ask the bank if it's registered on any digital wallets (Apple Pay, Google pay etc.).

Report it as fraud. If that gets rejected raise an official complaint with the bank. Then FOS3

Back to the topic, I did think if you were going to steal someone’s card or clone it or anything, a bus ticket seems an odd thing to use it forIf you want me to definitely see your reply, please tag me @forumuser7 Thank you.

One of my credit cards was charged for a rail fare at a station about 50 miles away that I've never been to.
The credit card firm refunded the transaction without any quibble. I asked whether they'd suggest a replacement card with a new account number, and they said probably not necessary, let's see how it goes. No further occurrence.1 -
