So I’ve got a court date, which I was sent a little while ago now, this month. I was going to send a couple of receipts to prove I was shopping at the time. My defences however, does this need submitting again?

No. You submit a detailed WS bundle as explained in the NEWBIES thread.

This is a normal stage, as expected. Have you prepared your WS yet?

The Defence you have already filed will be used.

However, as your Notice of Allocation says, you do need to file with the court and serve on the Claimant 'those documents upon which you intend to rely'. Those documents are your Witness Statement and evidence.

I think I may have fluffed up here…I’ve not done the witness statement as I didn’t realise I was the witness and I’ve not put any evidence together and my hearing is next week :-(

OK so do it now. Tonight.

Loads of people do their WS bundle late but what NOT TO DO, is not do it at all. Here's a recent good example:

I haven't no.....well at least I dont think I have? Since receiving the court date I have had no further letters from anyone. I'll crack on and get mine sorted!

Maybe not. No WS is good news...

Might be worth a quick call tomorrow morning to the local court to say you never received a WS bundle from the Claimant but neither have you seen a Discontinuance notice: have they received either?  Is the hearing vacated?

Check your junk emails for a discontinuance.

I haven't got any emails but I'll give them a call tomorrow. I'll be so glad when this is done with, its been hanging over me for too long now

Thats the same for everyone that gets a PCN and it gets to near a hearing, perhaps one or two years or more. !
