Why are people so disparaging about IHDs?

This may explain my confusion.Within a home there will be a Smart Metering System (SMS), typically comprising of Electricity and Gas meters, an In Home Display (IHD) and at least one WAN modem. Of course, not every home has a gas supply, and some solution approaches could result in the WAN function being physically delivered within the same box as the electricity metrology.
As I have no gas supply, my smart functionality is all in the same box.
Edit. On closer examination it does look like I have two boxes that appear to merge almost seamlessly.

Yep, my comms hub sits on top of the electric smart meter. Not sure if it's detachable or not but I did notice there was a cover to the comms part when the installer fitted it.RG2015 said:This may explain my confusion.Within a home there will be a Smart Metering System (SMS), typically comprising of Electricity and Gas meters, an In Home Display (IHD) and at least one WAN modem. @RG2015 ... irony ... after a large number of posts/comments we have two established MSE'ers ... one says 'The IHD is not a smart meter!!!!!' in response the other (the OP) says 'Surely the IHD pulls the tariffs off the smart meter'. I'm afraid you can't explain being ironic, you either get it or you don't.RG2015 said:

Sometimes you can't tell the pedants from the ironocists. And don't get me started on the trolls and wind-up merchants!
And just as it was becoming clear, it now seems that the communications hub and the electric meter are actually two different things (boxes).

... indeed and can be integrated in the same meter box dependent on make, the IHD accesses the data in the smart meter via wifi.RG2015 said:And just as it was becoming clear, it now seems that the communications hub and the electric meter are actually two different things (boxes).1 -
Ah, I think I am getting the hang of this.dealyboy said:

You say the IHD accesses the data in the smart meter via wifi
And I say
No it doesn't, HAN is not wifi.

What do you think HAN stands for?
There is no physical connection, how do you think the data gets to the IHD?0 -
It was a joke, probably not funny thoughmatt_drummer said:
