Surely that's just so you can't avoid them by changing lanes?

I thought the lines on the road were there when someone said, "I don't trust the camera! I think it lied." And from then on they put lines of x metres intervals in front of the scameras. It also makes it more obvious a scamera is coming up, so you can emergency stop and be rear ended by the tailgater behind you.

Happily, the SPECS (or 'average speed') cameras (that work by having a number of cameras monitoring all the lanes over a longer distance and calculating average speed) can be defeated simply by changing lanes between cameras.

I've heard the latest generation will resolve that.

Technically, they already can. It's simply that the government haven't approved them for multi-lane use (or something). Link

Bear in mind that the average speed cameras might not be paired up one with the next - I can't see any reason why camera one along a stretch of road couldn't be paired up with camera four, while cameras two and three may be paired.

Of course, that assumes there's a degree of inventiveness in whatever department organises these things...

The flash given of a Gatos is very bright therefore and can temporary blind a driver for this reason they only take from behind!
I can highly recommend the snooper S5R as a great speed camera detector!

there is a possibility that you could be offered the chance of attending a half day 'course' instead of a fine and points on your licence. I'm not sure if it's available in all areas.I think it's offered to drivers who are up to 6mph over the limit. You pay something like £70 to attend the driver aware course. Listen to a talk and answer questions. There is no 'pass or fail' but by attending it, your licence stays clean . my boyfriend received a letter inviting him to do this a couple of years ago. He said there were about a dozen other people and it was quite informal.
  • My ds went on one of those speed awareness courses last year. It cost him £150 but it did stop him from getting another 3 points and losing his licence. I like to think that it has taught him a lesson, but somehow doubt it.
