It goes without saying that I love MoneySaving in all shapes and forms but when it's in the name of charidee it's even better! So that's why I thought one MoneySaver deserved a mention for his MoneySaving charity challenge.

The Challenge

MoneySaver Phil's challenge (all in aid of childrens charity Sparks) is to find and power a car for under £100 to race from Staples (Corner in London) to Naples, Italy.

A tough challenge as for this paltry sum he needs a working car including an MOT. Plus he needs to source fuel, hotels, food, ferry and tax bills on top of this.

    Hello there, I'm Phil :)

Thanks Martin for helping to raise awareness for the cause.

The website explains most things, but I'll happily sit here and answer any questions anybody has.

In brief, we've got a ropey 15 year old Renault that I purchased for £51 and have to get it to Naples in September, via a very indirect route. There'll be five days of driving, seven mountain passes (including one cobbled one!) and around 3,000 miles covered. Assuming the car survives, I've then got to drive it back!

We're doing it to raise money for SPARKS. Since 1991, SPARKS has funded over 178 medical projects in the UK, committing £14 million to tackle conditions as diverse as cerebral palsy, the dangers of premature birth, spina bifida, childhood arthritis and cancers.

So please, above all else, make a quick donation via our JustGiving page (www.JustGiving.com/cimaracing) and get a warm fuzzy feeling. If you or your company feels the need, you can also offer to help us out with the challenge.

The fully prepared car should go on display on 29 August in Peterborough, and then there's a series of events before the Street Safari organised rally itself, so if you get the chance, come and say 'Hi', too.

    Thanks ;)

That looks fantastic - thanks TNM.

A quick glance shows it'll be useful for three of the four nights I've got left to sort out. I'll show it to my co-driver this weekend and go from there.

    Thanks again :)

  • we did staples2naples in 2005. it was superb. totally mental and the greatest fun ever.

we made it in a 13 year old rover 216 gti with no radio and no radiator fan. my mate forgot his passport, almost lost a wheel, almost fell off a mountain, had a few incidents of over heating, got lost countless times, scored zero points in the challenges and had a ball!!! we were also the first team to make it to tirano going via stelvio. almost killed us and the car. its some drive!!!

it's gonna be good. would love to do it again.

maybe try one of the other ones next time,

    good luck.

Will you have to pay the London congestion charge?!?!

I assume fuel won't be coming out of the £100?

    Hi Morph3us,

Yes, we had to pay the congestion charge! The fuel wasn't coming from the £100 budget, so that's ok - you could spend up to £100 on buying the car, but there wasn't a limit on what you could spend beyond that. Of course, the whole ethos of the event was to do it all on as small a budget as possible and, thanks to some support from some sponsors, we got away without spending too much.

To everybody else, thanks for your support. The JustGiving page shows we raised around £700, but there was far more than that donated elsewhere, so SPARKS haven;t come out of this too bad.

The car also survived, so it's currently resting while we think of how to prepare it for its next assault.

    We'll be back!
