Just read your thread, and I sympathise, I have been in this situation SO many times before. I'm pretty sure that your boss will help you get this sorted.

Try & calm down & speak to the nice boss, will he encourage/"force" HR to take pity on you while its the season of goodwill? Don't forget if they give you a cheque, it may not clear until Thursday or even Friday next week....
