Tom tom 520 the red cross of death!

Hi Nick! I managed to send my 720 back to Amazon, and a replacement arrived today! So it took Amazon 2 days to turn a replacement around, very impressive! BUT the same thing happened, I updated via HOME and I got the red cross again. However, before doing anything in HOME, I set my TOMTOM up with all my favorite destinations, phone numbers etc etc, then I copied EVERYTHING from TOMTOM onto a folder on my desktop (simply called 'tomtom backup') and I then pasted all of this back onto TOMTOM after it 'crashed' again and it worked no problem at all! The 720 booted up as normal.
I think the major thing here is to NOT install any operating system update (which will be ticked for update when you first connect to HOME). The OS installed on TOMTOM is most certainly up to date and so there will be no reason to install a 'newer' version. By all means update any GPS data, speed camera info and map corrections, but just don't touch anything labeled 'operating system/program' etc.
Moral of the story for me: As soon as you get your new TOMTOM, set it up how you want everything, connect it to your computer for the first time and make a copy of everything (open in a window, highlight everything, copy) into a folder on your desktop (or wherever you want) incase anything should go wrong. It saves a lot of hassle (from what I've read Nick you've had a lot of this!) and you can be ready to go again in a few minutes.
I know what you're all thinking 'this is a product that is meant to simplify things, make journeys easier, im giving TOMTOM a lot of money and I am getting a load of hassle' - I couldn't agree more! These problems need to be addressed and hopefully in the very near future TOMTOM will sort them out! In the meantime though, it seems this is the best way to get around 'crash' issues with the TOMTOM 720.
Hopefully this will help a lot of people! Obviously this info should apply for other TOMTOM models, ie 520 to which this thread was first focussed on.
Best Regards,

Actually thats not right... Not all tom toms come with V7.221 of the operating system and voice input on the 720 is shaky at best as well as TMC problems and TTS as well with the older software.. I have read on forums that the problems is that people start the Home software and immediately do system updates and this can sometimes cause slight incompatabilities with the older 7.05 maps that come with the TOMTOM. Seemingly its better to update the map and then update all system software.0 -
I also got the Red cross flashing on the SD card as it goes into the tomtom last night, after i connected it to tomtom home to make a backup. I had over 100 saved loctions and i used it on a daily basis before i could make the backup i got a fault code then my tomtom just went off, i tried turning it on but it just gives me the red flashing cross. I rang Tomtom and they said to send it off to them but because i use it everyday i had to buy a new one today.....Gutted!!!:mad:0

Ahh fair enough. I only dock now to get map corrections and GPS updates, can't really be bothered with anything else. TOMTOM's are a handfull of money but I still don't see why there are all these sodding problems, sort it out TOMTOM.Actually thats not right... Hi All,
Well guess what - my 520 came back today from REPAIR, with a little note to say "no fault found" (but by the way we have reflashed the OS) and it seems to work OK.
Of course NOW I have taken a backup, (and a non "HOME" backup) which are now carefully stored on my PC!!
I then went online with HOME 2.1 to ck for updates and, sure enough, it suggests I upgrade the OS! (currently sent back with 7.010 !! - why is that do you think?!)
I have upgraded the map, which seems to work OK - so now I am left with the question - do I or do I not upgrade to the latest OS - and if I do, do any of YOU think it will work????0
