Have you tried to do a restore????

    Hi Sco0ter,

    Thanks for your reply.

As this was brand new out of the box (with nothing personal from me on it) I did not Backup prior to upgrade, why would I :rotfl:

Or do you mean a restore from somewhere else?

TOMTOM HOME prompted me to do a backup BEFORE it would install anything... It came up with a message saying a backup had not been made and it was reccomended to do one before anything was modified..

This happened as soon as I pressed the upgrade my tomtom button

can you connect to it from you pc (dont use home). go into my computer and see if its shown as a removable drive. see if you can access it and see the files/folders
  • Alas not me...
  • sorry that last post crossed yours.
yes I can see the TT as a removable disc with it file structure... but I have nothing to restore from...

use explorer and copy all the files and folders to your desktop (just make a folder to put them in)Make sure you have "show hidden files folders" checked in folder options. delete everything from the card except the folders "raster" and your maps folder "UK and Ireland" I think. Then diconnect it and reconnect and run home... Home should then realise there is no operating system and reinstall tomtom.

This has been known to work as it seems to be the software that gets corrupt. All you do after that is copy all folders/files back to the tomtom but dont replace any files when asked... Keep the files on the tomtom.

You could also just copy all files from the tomtom into the folder and replace all the files with the new ones then copy all back to the TOMTOM

Forgot to say.. After Home installs the operating system try running the tomtom first to see if the error has been fixed... you will be missing a load of voices and stuff but thats why you copy the backup files onto the TOMTOM when its been fixed.
  • Many Thanks for this - I will give this a go... and let you know how I get on!!
  • I got a new TOMTOM 720 today and I didn't see the need to backup either and then I went to update and then the TOMTOM wouldn't work - red x of death with a hard drive icon flashing. Nothing could rectify this so ive arranged to send it back to Amazon for a replacement. I shall be copying the files from the TOMTOM hard drive to my desktop as recommended in this thread - does this mean that updates arent really possible... I don't really understand - if updates just crash TOMTOM devices! Immense reading, superb advise from everybody many thanks!
  • HI Jonny,
Having tried most of the advice found here (and elsewhere!) including the reformatting option on the TOM TOM itself I ended up putting in a call to TT support.
Interestingly enougth they led me through exactly the same process but after two emails (which were not the swiftest at a couple of days each to respond) I asked for a call and to speak with someone.

I then got an email saying "we have had a good idea - we will call you!" and after another day a call duly arrived.

All my emails had come from "Robert" based in Amsterdam as did the call. At this point it gets better in so far as Robert seemed to know his stuff - he took me through the process carefully agian - unfortunately with the same outcome. Result - an RMA number and arrangements to send back for repair - understanding at this point is a corrupt/damaged hard drive that a full format would not sort out?! Currently waiting for the packaging etc.. I will keep you posted!
