If you do the lottery then you have to be prepared for the question - What will I do if I win a lot of money?

If you do tell your friend you have won, be prepared for the follow on question - What are you going to do with the money?

  • Your win, your money.
If you want to share it then that's your choice. But good to thank her again for the winning ticket.
Work out how you want to share it, you don't even need to say how much it was unless you feel that someone else will say how much you've given them.
Tell her as soon as you've worked out what you want to do with it.
Or if it's not an amount that will make a noticeable difference to your life style you could just keep it and say nothing.
  • The tickets were a gift, you won fair and square, it is your money to do with what you will. However, the fact you keep the numbers of the tickets you give her indicates you feel you have a right to some of any winnings off those tickets which isn't a gift, basically at that point you're just buying yourself a ticket with extra steps and more headache because she might not feel obligated to share any winnings.

Sounds like you need to have an honest conversation about both of your expectations, and probably stop the tradition if it's going to cause more turmoil than good.
  • I think most people replying here are missing some crucial points:
If it is a birthday present, the tickets are a gift.  If there is some agreement prior to the gift giving, then it would technically be a syndicate.  As it was not, it is only upon the conscience of the winner to gift a portion of the winnings.  Now, this leads to point 2:
If the winner won say, £100,000 and they gifted half (£50,0000) to the present giver, if the winner died within 7 years, the present giver would be liable for inheritance tax for any sum over £7,000.
So, if they spent the £50,000 already (most likely they would have), they would be hit with a tax bill they can not repay easily. If the win was £1,000,000 the inheritance tax bill could be £175,000 if the giver dies 3-4 years after giving it to the recipient.  If they die under 3 years after giving the money gift, it would be £200,000.
    Food for thought.

    Hi

This type of question has bee around for a while.

The bottom line. Mrs Diy will always buy a scratch card and lotter tickets for our kids o their birthdays and xmas along with the main presents. It is the only time my OH buys lotter tickets/etc. We have never even considered for one moment about getting a penny even if they won millions as the ticket was gifted and its their money,  I'm sure our kids would tell us if the won anyhting as they are like that

A gift is a gift and it is n longer yours.

    :)

If it was me I would give her part of it even if it's only a small amount as a gesture.  If I gave someone a ticket as a gift I would not dream of making a note of the numbers.  Perhaps that's just me.

What sin has been committed?  Is it greedy to keep money that has come to you legitimately?

  • I'm glad I'm not your relative.  But, yes, if you are asking whether sharing is the right thing to do ... you already know it is.
