I've recently received my Octopus Mini. I  don't think I have much of a use for it, but I've been wondering if there is any prospect of its being used for billing.
    No. It's not secure enough.
I don't think the high security has much to do with billing; I think it's about national security - the possibility of millions having their power turned off and their meters bricked.

Show that to the anti smart meter brigade lol .I had a chat with a bloke today who said with great assurance " no one's EVER  going to fit smart meters in my house ..over my dead body.." he was 67 ..Nigel Farage told him that you can be remotely disconnected any time they want.

Car charging and long shower (whether I need it or not!) on the agenda.

It does make me laugh when you get upset people saying they charged everything yesterday.

All they have to do is look at emoncms.org/ukgrid and at this time of the year if the yellow solar peak is above the demand it is negative pricing.

There might even be some on Sunday too.

After seeing those rates, got up expecting a super bright sun... and it was actually raining (south west coast for you) but have dug out my infrared heaters, should see off this weeks electricity charges with them at full blast - at least I will be down to shorts in the house! Going to cook a load of chicken to eat cold thru the week as well.

Great fun at the moment but huge battery storage farms are already transforming Chinese and Californian grids, soaking up excess solar and wind to use during the peak.

Hopefully that will mean, longer term, the evening peak prices drop. So we'll loose the super-cheap days, but also the super-expensive hours. Better all round I think.

So, today, I wanted to cut the grass but there's rain forecast, so I'm doing all my washing instead. It's been a long time since I've used the tumble dryer in summer, but it'll be getting good use this afternoon. Car will be charged to the max, and I'll run a cleaning cycle on the dishwasher while I iron my shirts. And drink lots and lots of tea!

Then I'll check the app and find I've made less than a quid, but I'll have lots of clean things so that's alright.

Anyone want to predict what tomorrow's looking like?
  • I’ve been using Guy Lipman’s forecasting tool for Agile so far, and while the exact rates aren’t always spot on it has been pretty accurate for predicting the general price trends over 7 days. It’s certainly good enough for checking when it’s worth delaying washing loads and such before the actual prices come out.

According to the tool, the current forecast for tomorrow will have some more negatives early morning with rates overall creeping back up each day over the next week.
