Sainsbugs have Foresight Pease Pudding online. 50p for 220g tin. Could you make it and freeze it or is it one of those home made things that aren't cost effective when energy costs etc are factored in?

Thank you, Yes, I knew Sainsbury's stock the small tins. Fortunately, I have a more local source (my nearest Sainsbury's is over 10 miles way) and they also stock the big tins. I mentioned it more as an example of how our tastes are being manipulated away from traditional foods by the big supermarkets and the food fashion gurus. Not so many years ago it was sold more or less everywhere and the same is true of steak and kidney, as someone pointed out of the thread earlier. Nuts in shells at Christmas are another example. You can still get them, of course, but it gets harder every year as we are steered towards more profitable alternatives.

I hate it when ingredients get changed, I am sure these were not in Cadbury’s Dairy Milk in the past.
Vegetable Fats (Palm, Shea), Emulsifiers (E442, E476), Flavourings.
    I’m not buying that.
So the popular chocolate bar we knew is no longer available.
Worth checking out the chocolate in Lidl. Milk chocolate and all different strengths of plain.

    would've . . . could've . . . should've . . .

I know I'm stretching 'food' a bit but Stone's Special Reserve ginger wine disappeared from my local Waitrose 2 months ago, now discontinued, it cannot be found. This of course is in addition to the Crabbies green ginger wine which disappeared from supermarkets about 3 years ago. Aldi's Church's ginger wine is out of season (Christmas only).

I'm off to the next town this morning to try to pick up some Morrisons own label green ginger wine, which isn't bad.

    Two things:
    - standard grain whiskies need it for the 'Whisky Mac'
    - Stone's standard ginger wine is ubiquitous and horrible
Oh my. I’d forgotten about Stone's Special Reserve ginger wine! It disappeared from our Waitrose several years ago. I could have ordered a case online but I only wanted the odd bottle, maybe two at Christmas 😮

As far as I know, Mother's Pride (a sub-brand of the Hovis company) is now available only in Scotland.

Its their batch loaf (plain bread in Scotland) that's only made in one Hovis factory now in Glasgow, and probably only readily available in Scotland. But they used to sell their standard pan loaves in the past under the Mother's Pride label.

Just to add: I too googled pease pudding and I will most definitely not be looking for it in the shops either  :D

Pease pudding - it tastes much nicer than it sounds. And looks. A lovely thick slather on a ham sandwich, you can't beat it :)

Less a product that has vanished than an entire type that has been ruined. Both Waitrose and Morrisons used to sell 'premium' sausages with a high meat content (I suspect they might have come from the same source). A while ago both were reformulated with something called 'pea flour' as a substitute for breadcrumbs. A lot of other premium sausages have gone the same way.

Whether this was done for reasons of cost or (as I suspect) to appease all the misguided people who think 'gluten free' means 'better'  I have no idea but it has resulted in the sausages having a really nasty, rubbery texture. It's now hard to find a good quality sausage that hasn't been similarly spoiled.

At least my local butcher hasn't followed suit - yet!
