How do I remove this shower mixer cartridge?

  • @plumb1_2 because I need to replace it. As per a much longer thread from some weeks back, nowadays it is mixing far too much cold in with the hot (used to work fine).

The reason I asked is if you have a temperature problem or flow issue, and are trying to remove the correct cartridge? I’ve not read the other post.

@plumb1_2 It is a temperature problem. I am trying to remove the cartridge on the right-hand side that controls the temp, as per the many YouTube vids I've watched and advice from people on here in previous threads.

If anyone is wondering why it's taken me so long to carry out this task since the last thread it's because I've just come back from holiday - I didn't have time to look at it before I left.

You were one the first to respond to the original post, it was regarding the shower running colder:

The link further up is to an intermediate thread after the OP was thinking of buying a whole new mixer shower, however now it seems they opted to try to fix the old one.

That was months ago, and I’ve been out this morning working 7am, ( yes some plumbers do work on Sunday) emergency call-out for a friend. And friends don’t pay call-out fees 🙁. So brain not in gear, so not trawling through posts.

Anyway  without seeing it in person, I’d try using long nose pliers, or circling pliers. Check to see if they’re a retaining thread. Sadly there’s nothing standardised now with cheap Chinese imports.

Now I am settling down  having a nap before the match starts, bye.

    Hi BF.
Do you understand the principle involved in doing this? It unscrews, anti-clockwise as normal, but just needs - as Grumb says - a two-pronged spanner to catch in these two slots. But there are other methods.
You could use a 'punch' - any steel rod of, ooh, 6mm diameter or so - placed at an angle in one slot, held at as low an angle as you can, and tapped gently with a hammer in order to drift the cartridge around. A flat-blade screwdriver would likely do this - hopefully the cartridge will move before the tip is damaged   If trying this, make sure the tool doesn't dig in and damage the screw thread on the inside of the valve body that the cartridge needs to unscrew out of.
Or anything with two prongs - eg a good solid pair of long-nosed pliers might reach? In which case the two tips sit in the slots, and something else is used to rotate the pliers.
Or you find the correct tool...

Try gòogling "Peg Spanner" or "Shower Cartridge removal tool" to see if you can find one  the right type/dimensions for your shower or perhaps an adjustable one might work

An Angle Grinder spanner might fit.

Can you prise that circlip off with a flat bladed screwdriver?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
