Buying used car from dealer but it doesn't have V5C document

I'm looking into buying a used car from a car dealer.
it is a good price but they state in the ad it doesn't have V5C document and buyer needs to apply for a new one hence the lower price.
the car is HPI clear so not stollen etc and it's an older car or relatively low value (around £3k).
also the dealer has 10s of used cars listed on the famous used cars website.

I know I should fill and send V62 form for a new V5C document but what about taxing the car in the meantime?

I've heard some people were able to tax their cars while waiting for the new V5C to arrive (can take 6+ weeks) but some couldn't.
also DVLA apparently issued temporary 6 month tax for some peole over the phone while waiting but it seems they only did that during Covid lockdown and no longer.
I checked the car details and it's currently have no tax.it was expired in 2021 and that's the date last V5C was issued according to DVLA.

has anyone done this before? how was your experience? should I go ahead with the purchase or is it too risky with too much hassle?
any advice is appreciated.

The lack of V5C could be a real nuisance, but I'd be more concerned about the tax having expired in 2021.
Where has it been in the meantime? Has it been used abroad? Or locked in a garage? Or dumped in a field? Or been rebuilt after a serious accident ....?
I suspect you won't get a truthful (or at least trustworthy) answer to these questions.

it is HPI clear so can't be in involved in a serious accident .also the body shows some minor age related marks/scratches which rules out repair/repaint.it is a 15 years old car.
since it's a trade car dealer,I assume they are allowed to keep them in their car lot etc without having to tax them?

You simply can't tax it without the green slip from the V5 if you are not the registered keeper on the current V5.

DVLA advise you not to buy a car without one.

You apply for a V5 in your name on a form V62, and it takes 4 weeks, because they have to write to the current keeper and give them 14 days to object.

the V62 contradicts itself (if you have just bought it, you must tax it and you can't without the greenslip, but if you just bought it and have the green slip you wouldn't be applying for a new V5 on the V62 in the first place)

In The Olden Days you could tax at the same time as you applied for a logbook using the V62, because the the tax belonged to the car and could be sold with it, whereas now They had the bright idea of cancelling the tax on transfer of keeper, so that they get to collect the money for the same month twice on a few million cars per year, which is a nice bit of extra cash for HMRC.

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

    Hi OP

Others have already answered the v5

About the car. Are you spending money you can ill afford to lose?
If so, get it checked out by the RAC etc and that will give you a good indication if its been in a min/major or no crash and the health of the car etc.

We only buy cars from a main dealer as IMO they will act if a car has been misold, often by mistake etc.

    Good luck

We had the same thing last Summer, buying my son's first car from a dealer who didn't have the V5.

He (my son)  completed the V62 and took it to the Post Office, where they processed it and Taxed it at the same time.

    That's not necessarily the case.
All that it being HPI clear means is that there is no record of a serious accident on the insurance database.
If a car was involved in a serious prang and the owner paid for the repairs themselves without going through or informing their insurers (possibly because the car wasn't insured at the time or the owner wanted it kept off the records), then nothing will show up on the HPI check.

Yes I'm aware of that possibility, but this isn't a flashing new car,it is 15 years old and the body work isn't pristine.it has small dents and scratches you'd normally expect.so chances of it being in a serious structural damage, then repaired / repainted are really low.I'd say it wouldn't even be economical to do so.I don't worry about it.

Yes but even here 2 members already state they've been able to tax it without V5/slip at the sam etime they applied for V62..
that's why it's so confusing because I've heard same conflicting response from others too.

It appears I'm wrong and you can tax it if they have done it.

Certainly in the past I've taxed a car that came without a V5 at the same time as I applied for a V5 (before this cancelling the tax when you transfer became a thing), and it would make sense to let you either tax it or declare it SORN when you apply now (but sense is not usually a strongpoint)
I was going on the information on the V62, which is contradictory in that paragraph I posted, ending with "If you are not the registered keeper you may not be able to tax it until you get a V5c in your name."

There is guidance dotted around the dot.gov pages that says you can't tax it unless there is a V5 in your name too, but dot.gov is notorious for misinformation.
