I'd be wondering why the seller hadn't got the replacement @ only £25 if it would have got them an increased price.  Anyone running a car sales business is used to doing this on a regular basis as people are always losing their documents.  Is he selling for himself or selling on consignment?  Was it a right off & not had its full vehicle check, not just an MOT.  I am suspicious by nature though.  But I wonder if you are thinking something is odd & that is why you are asking.
Why is a dealer buying a car without a V5, then selling it on without.
Stolen & cloned car (even @ 15 years old)
Bought from impound as previous owner did not think it was worth the fee to get back?

Given a 15 YO car. There are masses of these around, so why run the risk of problems going forward & risk £3K

    Logbook loan on it?

    loan on a 15 years old £3k car?  :D

I'm sure the logbook loan companies would accept it, probably gave the poor owner a loan for £500.

OP - I'd be very wary about the car. Firstly, why doesn't the dealer have the V5? Do they have any paper trail to show that they are actually in a position to sell the car?

Then there's the MOT - it's not had one for 2 years, so it's presumably sat around unused and I doubt the dealer has done anything to it so I'd expect to at least give it a service at minimum, but also brace for new tyres, brakes and it otherwise running pretty bad.

What's so special about this particular 15 year old car to take the risk? How much cheaper is it than one with all the paperwork in order?

You said -  "should I go ahead with the purchase or is it too risky with too much hassle?"

I say - NO and YES.

The dealer should have obtained a new V5C. If they are too lazy to do that in order to save their customers a lot of messing about, then they don't deserve my business. They may deserve your business but that is up to you.

I think £3k is too much for a 15 year old car anyway. Far too risky for me with things dropping off, wearing thin, going rusty, failing and generally falling to pieces. Whether or not I'm covered by the law. That'd be even more hassle and messing about to get sorted out and would mean having to manage without wheels for weeks on end. No thanks.

Just my own opinion, of course but you did ask. I would avoid that dealer like the plague. A bargain is sometimes not a bargain. This is one of those times.

My brother buys and sells motorbikes as his business. My daughter had a 125cc bike she wanted to sell as she is now working abroad so he agreed to buy it off her. As she was abroad and we didn't know where she had put all the paperwork, he took it and put it up for sale with no V5C, as he was hoping to shift it quick. Fortunately, a couple of weeks later we found the V5C and dropped it round, and as he hadn't sold it yet, he put the price up a couple of hundred quid.

OP, there are probably many good reasons why they don't have the paperwork, but as above, sounds like this dealer is a bit dodgy.

what is special about it is that it's a nice, lovely car that I like and ticks all boxes for me (price, spec, trim, colour, number of doors, millage)and I can't find another example without having to travel to other side of the country (not possible for me).these sell between £3k-£5k depending on spec, condition and "luck" (via dealers) .also I only buy from dealers not privately to have some sort of buyer rights and protection.

since it's a relatively stablished used car dealer, with actual sign and name advertised and 10s of used cars in stock,I think chances of stolen/cloned etc are none.besides it's not a 50k car and it shows as HPI clear and buying from a dealer means you have right to cancel+refund for at least 1 month.

I post this here mainly to ask about taxing etc process and others experiences buying cars without logbook (it's common),I wasn't really worry about loan/stolen/cloned scenarios because in this case they aren't likely.

that being said I'm not considering it anymore because it seems there's no way to know if I can tax and use it at the same time I apply for the new logbook ,or I have to wait 4+ weeks for it to arrive first.

    Hi

About the dealer being around for a while,

Some dealers do nt own the stock
Check Trustpilot reviews etc especially any negatives and see if they sound plausable and what the co did to resolve them or did they just ignore the neg feedback says a lot, so check

The link may help but your choice and  possibly pay the min at least via cc to protect your consumer rights.

Some years ago I bought a car which didn't have a V5C; it had been seized by a Council for non-payment of fines.
Getting a new V5C & certificate wasn't too difficult, but I don't recall how long it took.

Did you ask the dealer why there was no V5C?
