Poorly fitting flue collar disagreements - opinions please

We recently had a new boiler fitted by Snug Energy. It's in a small annex between the house and garage with a corrugated roof. They said before fitting that they would get the roof join as neat as possible but it wouldn't be perfect with this kind of roof. We spoke to a roofer who said he could seal it off afterwards for a reasonable price. It has been left with 2-3 inch gaps between the collar and roof which the roofer says is unacceptable but Snug seems to think is fine. My thoughts are it should have been cut to roughly to fit the roof profile at least. I would value any thoughts. We are disabled pensioners and not fit enough to get up on the roof ourselves.

  • Hard to tell what's going on there, so some wider photos showing the whole outside portion of the flue would help. Also one showing the flue inside, before it goes through the roof.

Not sure what the grey outer pipe is doing, or what it is, but - at best - I'd say this is a terrible job, and - at worst - cannot possibly conform to regs. I can't figure out what that white pipe is, for example - surely not the inner, exhaust, part of a concentric flue pipe?If it is, the the outer sleeve can't be doing its job of taking in fresh air from outside.

Snug should not have taken on this job on the basis of "as neat as possible, but not perfect", and their outcome ain't even neat.

    More photos, please.
  • That needs fixing as you'll get rain water running down the white pipe and inside your house. That's definitely not right.

Not quite sure what the pipe parts are, but the white pipe comes out of the top of the boiler and our of the roof. Then there's a collar thing on it which doesn't fit right.

That’s bad job, it should have had a aluminium/lead flashing with a rubber collar. Specially made for vertical flues, buy them from most merchants. Vertical roof slate.
It could have then be dressed to the profile of the roof, sealed then pop rivets or self tapping screws, (tec screws),
plus a cover plate inside. Very poor job get them named and shamed

And you shouldn’t be paying for a roofer to repair/ seal that, it’s part of the boiler install.
Get that Snug energy back and ask them to send a different engineer as the first one or the company has pulled the wool over saying that’s ok.

We've done a bit of research and it seems they've used an apex roof collar when they could have got a collar specifically for a corrugated roof. They're coming back tomorrow but atm are proposing to turn the collar 90 degrees so the spurs of the collar fit down the gulleys. Also to trim a  bit off the white chimney so the collar pulls down better. I'm concerned they'll end up damaging the boiler if they're not careful and I'm still not sure how well it will fit.

It needs a vertical roof slate, turning the collar won’t make it watertight.
Phone them today and insist they fit a vertical roof slate, any heating company/engineer with only 5% brain functioning knows.

The flue inside should have a 25 mm gap or whatever the manufacturer says, plus a sealing plate.

Thank you for all the advice @plumb1_2 and  @ThisIsWeird
Can I ask if these are 'best practices' or something that impinges on safety regs? Would I get any joy from someone like Gas Safe or Trading Standards if I need to take this further?

Boiler flue is covered by manufacture installation instructions and must be followed
    Roof seal best practice

better to let them putt the issues right first before contacting others. Take note of the engineers gas safe numbers, it should be in the paperwork they left you.
You could even email them directing them to this post 😂😂😂
