PS All gas meters have a certificated life!

do you no if theres a central list somewhere online?

Under EU rules meters could be approved by any EU country and would then be valid across the EU.

However, unlike electrity meters, there is no UK central list for gas meters.
  • All this, just to avoid having a couple of old meters changed for modern ones.

It has certainly opened my eyes, I had no idea that people could feel this way about gas and electricity meters.

I know that older people are wary of change. My wife had a friend who refused to accept the analogue to digital TV change some years ago. Her resistance lasted a week! Get smart meters and, a month or so later, you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

    This  :)

@Deleted_User your resistance to smart meters is irrational given the reasons you provided. But it is common for people to act irrationally in certain circumstances, so it is well understandable.
Gas: warm air central heating, instant water heater, Octopus tracker
Electricity: 3kw south facing solar array, EV, Octopus intelligent

Yes, I think we all understand this, especially with the bad press and erroneous information that surrounds smart meters.

On a money saving inclined forum, I think the best  thing to do is to encourage, reassure and help consumers in actually saving money.

Assisting in avoiding something that comes at no cost and that has large potential economic advantages is not helpful, at best, in my opinion

SM are not free, we all pay for them on our bills.
(and as usual with any Government forecast, the original cost and timescale for everyone to have one has at least doubled, and we`re talking £billions)

Circumstances for having a SM, your meters are inside your house.
You can`t be bothered to read them once a month and enter your readings to get an up to date bill.

SM do not save you money, cutting down energy use does.
If it ain`t on, it ain`t using.

True. However, smart meters also give access to cheaper time-of-use tariffs such as Octopus Agile; Tracker; Cosy; Intelligent and Flux.

There is now an estimated 6 month waiting list for consumers wishing to switch to Octopus Tracker. My gas price of 5.5p/kWh might be the reason why consumers want to switch away from standard tariffs.

Smart meters are here to stay.

You are right, we have paid/are paying for them, but seeing as we have already paid for them it costs nothing extra to have them fitted.

Of course, cutting down on your energy use saves you money, we all agree with that.

Smart meters are not fitted solely to save you having to read the meter and they are generally fitted where your existing meters are, which is often outside your house.

Even if you already have smart meters, it is advisable to still take readings periodically to ensure that the readings match you bill.

You don't have to read much on this forum to realise that not having smart meters will prevent you from accessing some energy tariffs that will save you money.

Therefore, having smart meters fitted unlocks the potential to save money, it's a fact, why persist in saying that it doesn't?

If it is on, and it is using, surely paying the least amount possible for what it is using is a good idea?

Can I ask, do you know what a smart meter is?

I get the feeling that you think it might be the small display that comes with them that you will usually see on a kitchen worktop or a shelf somewhere, the little display that shows your current and historic use and other information of a similar nature.
