Having had a phone call from the vet last night to say the operation had gone fine, we went down this morning to collect Otis.

The vet met us with a serious face and a shake of his head to say that during the night, Otis had managed to get the 'bucket' of his head that stops them biting the wound, and had ripped his leg to shreds. It was now much worse than it was in the first place.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, Otis would have not been able to walk very much at all, and the vet said he would have a poor quality of life, so we made the very sad secision to have him put down.

The vet was as unhappy as us, he had worked all that morning to try to save his leg, but it was just too bad. He had tears in his eyes.

We like to think that between us and the kindly vet, we gave Otis a better end than he would otherwise have had (a road accident, or death by freezing or starvation).

Thanks all for your support and good messages..

Oh how sad. You gave him a dignified end to his life and for that you should be proud. :A :A :A :A

Oh Im so sorry to hear that. Thats awful news for you and you must be devastated.

Like you say, you gave a lovel, needy soul a more comfortable end than he would ever have had if you had not stopped for him.

It was meant to be, please take comfort in your faith and the fact that you were there for him when he needed you.

You did all anyone could, you should be proud of what you did for him. If only there weere more like you in the world.

I am so sorry for your loss,You did the kindest thing possible finding him and taking him in for such a short space of time,You should be so proud of yourselves not driving past him.You both did all you could to give Otis the best life possible, just remember that :) You sound such caring people and we cannot be cross at all :) You gave Otis some comfort and happiness that was needed,Just a shame that his life had to be so shortened so suddenly.

    RIP Otis

    *hugs*

    Oh no, how sad.:(

But as others have said, it was a peaceful and dignified end and he did experience the love and affection you gave him beforehand.

You did the right thing and I am sure Otis would have went away happy that there was someone who cared enough for him to try and help him in the end.

You must be so upset after getting excited at him coming home.

I wish you all the best of fortune in the future, you really do deserve it.

I cannot imagine how you must be feeling. My heart goes out to you and your husband . But ask yourselves one thing. With hindsight, would you have still rescued him?

You know, and we all do,that of course you would. And should the opportunity arise again, which it more than likely will, you will do the same again.

Caring people don't stop caring, that is why it hurts now because you think he didn't have a chance. He did. What he did to himself was so tragic but he would have suffered so much more if he had been left out on that road to die.

Try to be philosphical about it,hard i know, but try and be positive, enjoy christmas and look forward to the next little soul you come across that you can help.
  • Oh SDW, I'm so sorry! :(

The poor little mutt. At least his last days were spent being cared for and loved. :A

You've still restored some of my faith in mankind though so thank you. :)
  • I'm so sorry. :grouphug: You must be so upset.

Thank goodness you picked him up, as the alternative would have been a slow and painful death for him.

I hope you find it in your heart to take in another needy dog when the time is right?
I know Scooby are always desperate for good homes.
