How lovely. Well done you for not just driving by. :T

Its true, animals seem to quite often choose their owners and it seems you were meant for each other.

We rescued a cat over a year ago, he seemed to choose us too. He seems so happy and grateful to have a loving home and he adores the children and follows them everywhere (even jumping on the trampoline when theyre all playing on it - which is a sight to behold).

If you're anything like us, you wont ever regret taking in Otis, you will hopefully be rewarded a hundred times over with love, cuddles and waggy tails. He'll be great company and animals (especially dogs) are great therapy for depression.

Congratulations on the new family addition and merry Christmas.

I seen this alot in greece where by they just dump there unwanted dogs and at night they roam the streets loking for scraps of food. Very upsetting to watch. i ask a local guy why people didnt care, he said " we feed them the left overs, but we have are own pets to look after and these dogs are mongrels.

This had me in tears, the poor little things, there fur was burnt by the sun and they looked so down. me my husband and son where so gutted, We wish we could of took them all home with us.

Dont think there is any charities, but if anyone knows of anyway we can help or donate money can you send me the info.

    Thanks

Cathy,i agree it is heartbreaking the way some countries treat their strays. We are bad enough but on the whole the strays are caught and given a chance. Many foreign countries just don't care.

The best animal charity i have ever come across, and i do support them, are the WSPA http://wspa.org.uk/index.asp

They often do campaigns for stray dogs and cats, and if you contact them they may well have a local headquarters in Greece, they do seem to have in every country. They should be able to put you in touch with who to contact.
Let me know how you get on,and well done for caring.

That is wonderful news,i am so pleased for you..What a lucky dog,and what a shame there are so many out there that don't realise people would help them if only they weren't so scared, and run off.

What a wonderful christmas present, did the vet have any idea how old he might be?[/quote]

He said about seven, which suits us, we're in our late 50s so he can be middle-aged with us!

    Thats great news :)

Youll have to buy Otis some nice christmas presents now!!

I think he's had the best Christmas present he could ever wish for - a new loving home :D .

It sounds like you were meant to drive that way, and find him.

  • I have just been looking at pictures of hounds. The vet has just described Otis as a 'podenco' (hound) - I think he is a crossbreed of various types of sighthounds, maybe with a bit of retriever thrown in.

He is the red colour of an Ibizan hound but he is more sturdily built and his ears, although large, are not as erect as the Ibizan's.

So, I would say his main breed is some sort of sighthound.

    We'll never know for sure!

Our last dog, Butch, who died in 1993 was a cross between a border collie and a corgi - more working dogs - and the only other dog we have had was Nelly, a purebred racing greyhound (another member of the sighthound family).

I don't think we can describe Otis as a lurcher because the cross has to be between greyhound and other working dog afaik.

So......... he ain't nothing but a hound dog!

Well it's not often a dog chooses you, so well done!

When he gets better he'll be able to run like the clappers. I often walk a friend's lurcher and she has got one hell of a turn of speed.

Apparently she's not as fast as a greyhound but she has the attention span of a goldfish (7 secs) so you have to predict what may take her fancy, or else you are looking for her for the next half an hour!
