Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • MORE UPDATE:

Otis has had his operation to repair his achilles tendon and all has gone well.

We can pick him up from the vet tomorrow and get to know him (and he us).

    Thanks all for your support.

Was it a big operation,or did the injury look worse than it was? Will he be completely able to use the leg normally?

What a lucky dog,to get free of the snare.Evil revolting things they are.I wonder too if he had an owner, being about 7 years old,but who never bothered to look for him when he went missing.

Anyway, whatever the reason,so pleased he is going to be home with you soon. What a wonderful result.Your christmas will be all the richer for the wonderful thing you have done.
  • We actually thought his leg would have to be amputated. The vet said this operation should work. At its best he will be able to walk normally, at its worst he will have a limp.

There are snares, traps and poison all around these mountains. The poison is actually put down to kill cats and dogs, as they kill the things the hunters want.

I expect he did have an owner, who couldn't find him/didn't look for him when he went missing, or, if they found him, would just abandon him. A hunting dog who can't hunt is no good and I'm afraid many Spaniards with working dogs would not dream of spending any money on them. They are a commodity like a plough or a tractor and if it is broken and is going to take a lot of money to fix, then you don't bother (especially if it will not work so well afterwards). You just get a new one.

Having said that, the greyhound we had many years ago was going to be put down because she had stopped winning races. She was only two years old! So maybe we Brits who call ourselves animal lovers are not much better.

Spaniards adore children and are marvellous with them, and their sense of family is to be commended, but their treatment of animals is something I have struggled to come to terms with since living here.

Anyway, a happy ending for a hound!

  • Can I just say this is one of the nicest things I've read on MSE in a long time. :)

What better gift for Christmas could anyone ask for. Good on you for not driving past. :snow_grin
  • To all those who say we did well for not driving past - thanks.

But understand, there was NO WAY we could have driven past.

We have stopped for dogs before but they have been too terrified to come anywhere near us. My husband was physically sick about the state of one little dog we tried to rescue, who just ran away. It did his anxiety no good at all, he had bad dreams for two nights.

Anyway, we have now got Otis so we'll need an extra dose of whatever it takes to shut our eyes to other dogs and DRIVE ON PAST. We can't have any more. (As pracising Christians though, we always pray for them to find peace one way or another).

Thanks all for your good wishes.

When I learn how to post pictures and if it is possible with my slow dial-up, I;ll post a picture of Otis.

    I agree! :kisses3:

I am so glad you stopped for Otis and took him in.

I'm not sure what part of Spain you are in, but my friend volunteered for Scooby:

They do wonderful work rescuing lots of animals, lots of them abandoned hunting dogs & greyhounds.

They are a friendly bunch and do lots for sighthound rescue - I know they have some members living in Spain.
You might be able to find some good people on there to help with any future dogs in need?

Well done you!!! :D Please keep us updated on Otis's progress.
