Think we have a dog.....

  • Hi everybody - an update:

The dog is going to be OK and he is going to be ours!

He is, as we thought, a hunting hound. He was not microchipped. His leg has been caught in a snare and has cut through the tendon. However the vet (a very handsome young man, I must say!) says that it can be fixed although he may still have a limp. They are keeping him in today to re-hydrate him and if he is well enough operate tomorrow.

The vet has knocked some money off as we are taking in a stray (as you said he might Sandy!) and the whole lot should not cost more than 200 euros. Then of course he has to have all his injections and we'll also have him microchipped and get an estimate of both time and price for his pet passport.

His name, we have decided, is Otis.

We mentiioned to the vet that we had had a hound before (a greyhound, many years ago) and how quiet and calm she was, and mentioned that Otis was the same. He said hounds on the whole are like that. He also said that hunting hounds like Otis are abandoned in great numbers in Spain, but if any are rounded up and taken to the vet, they are often shipped to the UK and Germany to be used as 'therapy dogs' for people with Alzheimers and Autism:T because they are so quiet, calm and obedient. Seems we've got ourselves a nice dog!

As you can infer from the above tale, the vet spoke pretty good English (unusual for round here), his practice was great and everyone there made such a fuss of Otis that this will be our Vet's practice from now on. (Nothing to do with him being handsome, I promise!).

Anyway, we should have Otis back for Christmas, although he has to have his splint on for 15 days and we can start building his strength back up again. My husband's dying to take him for a walk. I said a dog with a limp will be jsut about right for me!

Anyway, happy Christmas from us and Otis!

That is wonderful news,i am so pleased for you..What a lucky dog,and what a shame there are so many out there that don't realise people would help them if only they weren't so scared, and run off.

What a wonderful christmas present, did the vet have any idea how old he might be?

  • I seen this alot in greece where by they just dump there unwanted dogs and at night they roam the streets loking for scraps of food. Very upsetting to watch. i ask a local guy why people didnt care, he said " we feed them the left overs, but we have are own pets to look after and these dogs are mongrels.

This had me in tears, the poor little things, there fur was burnt by the sun and they looked so down. me my husband and son where so gutted, We wish we could of took them all home with us.

Dont think there is any charities, but if anyone knows of anyway we can help or donate money can you send me the info.

    Thanks

    awwww! How lovely!

The only tip I have is to not feel sorry for him, it starts you off on bad habits. be pleased that he now has a loving home and family who will take good care of him.

Your vet will advise on how best to feed him, though usually it is little and often to avoid him being sick with a large meal.

Now you have to go out and buy him a nice collar for his christmas!

    That's really good news.
I've known of several Brits who have taken rescued dogs (and a few cats) to a centre where they've been neutered and then shipped to Germany to be rehomed
  • That's a lovely story and so glad you have found a nice dog... or rather he's found you! That's made my day, pets are so important and make a differece to your life. :j
