Are ASHP the way to go?

I would suggest with your battery setup and solar you could make this work efficiently with a little thought. Especially in winter or with some E7 or time of use tariff to charge up your batteries cheaply overnight to run the heat pump during the day from battery and some top-up from solar. What were you winter solar figures like?Magnitio said:matt_drummer said:Hi,
Maybe you could tell me more?
When was that, what did they offer in terms of equipment, did you or are you having it done?
The surveyor couldn't tell me much, I get the impression that what they offer is quite basic, ie nothing fancy in terms of controls or energy monitoring?Quote came through a few weeks ago. Daikin EDLA08E2V3 heat pump and Joule TCEMVI-0200SFC cylinder. I can't justify to my wife why we should be spending £7k (after £5k contribution from the government) when it will cost us more to run at the current gas and electricity rates. Plus we will have also have a heat pump in the garden, pipes up the wall, a smaller airing cupboard and a lot of disruption whilst it happens.I am keen to reduce emmissions, but this option is a bit challenging at the moment. I'm sure there will be some interesting developments in the next couple of years that will make installation a bit easier and the difference between gas and electricity rates may well reduce.
Without solar and battery it appears to us to be about equal at the moment as we have also asked for a quote from the squid and two local heat pump companies.0 -
Over the past few months, gas prices (on Tracker) have averaged 5.6p/kWh. Electric rates I'm paying (or being paid for) are around 20-25p/kWh. During the depths of winter when solar generation is at its lowest and heat requirements at their peak, the average daily rate for electricity would be higher. A 10kWh battery would not be sufficient to store all the required energy to run the house and heat pump through the higher priced periods.MultiFuelBurner said:I would suggest with your battery setup and solar you could make this work efficiently with a little thought. Righto yep now with more info that helps this is the issue not knowing what prices people are paying for energy and working off the SVT when reasoning a reply.Magnitio said:

No way I could have know your were only paying 5.6p per kwh of gas over winter!! Wow

Tracker gas has been really cheap over winter. It's really hard to justify putting in a ASHP when it's going to cost more to run than the gas boiler.
I still heat my hot water tank with gas too, rather than using excess solar. Better to pay around 5-6p per kWh of gas than lose the 21.36-34.31p I can get for each kWh of electricity I export.Barnsley, South Yorkshire
Solar PV 5.25kWp SW facing (14 x 375) installed Mar 22

Daikin 8kW ASHP installed Jan 25

I suspect they are on the failed tracker v1 with a maximum price of 6p kWh for gas. A beta product by Octopus which they only had to provide for 12 months but are extending that contract with the same ceiling price of 6p kwh.Reed_Richards said:What's "tracker gas"?
You have to hand it to Octopus they treat their customers well and appear to share the profit from their platform kraken sales with thei energy customers.
If we had to pay for electricity we would move to them.0 -

It's capped at 30p/kWh, but hasn't been above 10p since December.
