We’ll be renovating our bungalow in spring time. It’s currently 9” solid wall with zero insulation anywhere.

We’re planning on underfloor heating downstairs with an ASHP (approximately 90m2) and upstairs with a new dormer roof heated by radiators. We’ll be putting 4”kingspan on all external walls and 6” in the roof space.

The question is, is an air source heat pump the way to go?

Cheers

Is that inside or outside you are planning on putting the insulation ?
For a 9" solid brick wall, you only need 75mm (3") of the Kingspan to hit the required u-value. That said, 100mm will future proof you as & when the targets change.

One tip - Over the top of the windows, use a strip of plywood instead of plasterboard - This will give you something solid to fix curtain rails to (assuming you are using the warm batten method).

Her courage will change the world.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

Yeah the extra inch we just thought we may as well while we’re on really. It’s going on the inside of the house

cheers for the tip! I’d though of doing that for the kitchen wall units but not for the curtain poles

The answer is probably (yes) perfect time to put in an ASHP during a renovation.

I say probably because the costs between heating with gas and heating with ASHP are pretty much even and there is the expectation that sometime soon (let's say a couple of years) electricity will not be solely prices on the back of gas prices.

Partly the decision will be a happier greener feeling rather than a financial one.

I would suggest going for a named brand that has been in the ASHP market for a long time.

2K for a Gas boiler vs 10K for ASHP is a big difference in the hope that the electric will come down, Even if the price is decoupled from Gas the demand will be shooting up with EV's that have to day time charge and heatpumps running in the day.

Some people might say that it is a small price to pay to stop burning fossil fuels in their home.

I would say, if you can afford it, go for it.

Or better spent on more insulation, Triple glazing, More solar, Or an EV.

Or all of that and an ASHP?

Although none of that will end their use of gas if that is their aim.

And make sure to go for a model that doesn't have an expensive standby consumption.

If available, consider electric wallpaper rather than underfloor

I think the underfloor heating would be wet, much better idea than pure electric.
