We use napkins whilst eating at home.  I wanted to buy some new cotton ones and was very surprised how hard they were to find.
Still widely available in Spanish markets, I believe.
And Portugal & Madeira, or in a catering store (or online).

Material napkins are available in Dunelm, ikea, m&s and Amazon.

The strings and clips to wear them as a bib are also available in Amazon.

I'm sure they must be easier to wash than an apron.
  • If only I could thank your post more than once @Longwalker. All of it! :D

Himself's niece was 22 there the other week. She looks at me like I'm something out of Dickens, even though her mother is about 5 years older than I am.

  • Surely, an apron is for cooking/meal prep…?   I would never sit down to eat whilst still wearing one.

We do use napkins however — indeed, we’d be lost without them!
  • Aye father was strict. He tried to raise us proper like wot he had bin.

Another one - if your elbows were on the table - you'd get a tap on the elbow with the flat edge of a knife. "All joints on the table will be carved."
Guess we were of the generation where manners were knocked into us from an early age
My mother in law is 84 and in 30+ years I’ve never once heard her use the word “please”. I think she must have skipped the manners lessons! Strange as her son is unfailingly polite.
Anyway, I’m tempted to think about the aprons-while-eating option as he does seem to garner a few dinner medals these days.
Love the “All joints on the table will be carved” expression. Never heard that one before.

Apart from the plastic bib with the area to catch stuff when I was a baby, I only wear an apron for cooking but I have found myself forgetting to take it off sometimes if I am grabbing something quick … otherwise it comes off and I eat like normal!

Shouldn't thi thread belong in the Families and relationships board..And all the visiting to read the replies and the OP hasn't responded once. Is this another wind up thread?

Initialy the thread was related to money saving, and I was a bit puzzled by some answers and decided to not answer.

My meaning really was, does it help saving money to wear an apron at meals ? Instead of having to clean or buy new clothes in case of an "accident" ?

Many of us are having problem heating our houses, so is it worth spending money on more detergent and washing when you can avoid it with an apron ?

I'm still of the view that your children should be encouraged to show they don't need to wear aprons to keep their clothes clean, otherwise you are not equipping them with appropriate social skills.

I myself grew up wearing an apron at all meals at home, and I never felt like I was equipped with appropriate social skills.

I have always encouraged them to pay attention and try and keep their aprons as clean as possible. But accidents happen to anybody and that's what we want to save money on.

Just wondering if there are still people wearing aprons for eating in order to keep stains and spill away from clothes, or is that too old fashioned ?

When I was a kid most of us in the village had an apron or tabard at all meals.

As an adult I have kept that habit and also made it a rule for all my kids.

Today my second eldest said they are the only teens in the world who have to wear aprons when eating.

Well, Your kids might be right. Very harsh and outdated mum. When someone shares it in social media the picture of them wearing aprons they might look like clowns and get mocked by their classmates, lol.
If you are afraid of food splashes, stains on the clothes, etc, there are a lot of of paper alternative could do the job. For instance using kitchen rolls, used news paper, etc. It is easier as you just throw them away thereafter.
Also food residue on the clothes could easily be removed by washing machine. Any food splash on aprons will need to be cleaned/washed anyway. From money saving POV, washing powder/gel will need to be used to clean either the shirts or the aprons anyway. So there is no money saving here.
For the kids who frequently splashes foods, get stain on their shirts, what about using kitchen rolls, old newspaper. Thereafter just throw it away. It costs almost nothing.
IMO the aprons things is the same with handkerchieves, while in the past it was useful, nowadays people are not using it as there are a lot of cheaper more practical alternatives such as tissue papers.
Regarding the first question I have seen kids are wearing winter coats, winter jackets instead of aprons when eating outdoors from the food stalls during winter :#
I have never seen kids nowadays are wearing aprons while eating in font of the street food stall. Let alone if they are already grown up kids, teenagers.
