Poor kids - this isn't for real, is it?
I'm wondering if this might become a saga along the lines of fake UGGs and plimsolls for school. 🤔
  • The last person I knew that did this was my maternal grandmother...and she died fairly young in 1987!
  • Would they wear one if they went to McD, a friend's house for tea, or Fish & Chips by the sea?

If they are being made to wear one as a teen are you letting them develop, to trust them to eat without making a mess?

As another said, modern wash detergents allow for easy cleaning, women no longer have to spend a couple of days doing the washing, which is why it was sensible to wear one, but those days are long gone thankfully.

Sometimes wear an apron when cooking especially when tinned tomatoes are concerned!

I only wear an apron when I'm making pastry/chucking flour around the room.  All of my 4 grandchildren (aged 4 - 9), along with their parents, can manage to eat without dropping their food into their laps.....

No, but I probably should!  Especially when eating curry, beetroot, tomatoes and baked beans - in fact anything that stains!  And you can guarantee it's always when I've just put on a clean top!

I have never in my entire life heard of people wearing aprons while eating.  Well, not unless they were also kitchen staff of some sort and were having a quick break.

Napkins, yes.  Tucked into one's collar otherwise on the lap or, when an infant or eating lobster, tied round one's neck.

I don't think we have any aprons anymore in our house - we did get bought a couple as presents at some point as OH is a good cook and I like to bbq but certainly not intended to be worn while eating.

  • absolutely - we've had to sacrifice our dining room for 14 year old so eat on the sofa - combo of slouchy sofa and fat tummy means I have to wear an apron/drape myself in a tea towel as spilling is inevitable. Teens tend to roll their eyes at me, then panic when they spill food on themselves, normally stainy food on a white hoodie/football top

Just wondering if there are still people wearing aprons for eating in order to keep stains and spill away from clothes, or is that too old fashioned ?

When I was a kid most of us in the village had an apron or tabard at all meals.

As an adult I have kept that habit and also made it a rule for all my kids.

Today my second eldest said they are the only teens in the world who have to wear aprons when eating.

I think your second eldest is correct.  I’ve never heard of wearing an apron to eat.
