in Energy
When I am out walking my dog, during darkness, I notice that many houses are in darkness.
I assume that most people are at home, perhaps watching TV with very little lighting on.
I do turn lights off, when not in use, but I always watch the TV with the light on.

Bulbs in my house are all 9w LED so cost is about 0.3p per hour.
There are better ways of saving energy, i do keep one light on while watching TV.0 -
Hi sh ... me too (I am usually looking for my cat), but I generally see a light in a corner, a TV. So yes I think you are probably the exception. I don't have a TV myself but use my laptop sometimes with the light on (for obvious reasons) but sometimes off.

Some sit in the dark-sih in order to keep curtains open and see who is coming and going - often this is people like me the old groups but younger ones inc many older ones have cctv/Ring security everyhwere - so be careful when you go to famiy/mates house ring the bell and as you wait you slag them off and then think why they are not opening the door, lol

I'm quite ugly so it's best for everyone in the dark😂
All bulbs in lamps are 2-4w so not too worried about a lamp on per room
Now the "BIG" light hardly ever used but not for money saving.3 -
We have 2w LED bulbs all over the house, understairs cupboard too, and in the loft. We generally just leave one light on in the kitchen and a lamp in the living room. No TV here either so just use laptop.

I typically will have 1 light on in the room where I am plus 2 in the hall (1 upper, 1 lower). All are LED & that typically adds up to under 20W total so only a few pennies per night to run.0

2 of our household will happily do so, the other 2 have at least a lamp on otherwise it hurts our eyes.
The only time I or the other person tend to find ourselves in the dark is when we've not noticed it gradually getting darker, then you look away from the screen and realise (and then 'oh yeah, that's why I wasn't comfortable' when we turn a light on).
[Incidentally I've always found the cinema overwhelming - I knew about the lack of subtitles and loud sound but thinking about it now, it was visually overwhelming and very difficult as well. If I want a quasi-cinematic experience at home I still have a dim lamp on, never purposefully turn all lights off. And subtitles on and volume at a pleasant level, of course.]0 -
if we're watching a film in the lounge we'll turn off the main light so its more like the cinema.
the fire also kicks out a lot of light and OH and I do sometimes sit listening to music and talking about our day after the kids have gone home with the lights off or only a side light on.
if i'm up early or can't sleep i might also go down and drink a cuppa and look at the garden out of the window without turning the lights on. its nice to see the world get brighter over an hour (in summer i'll sit outside)
but if we're all doing our own thing (playing games on console. on laptop. doing craft things) or playing board games the lights will be on.
normally you wouldn't see any of that in winter dog walking tho as we're good at closing the curtains to keep the heat in.
summer maybe as we leave the curtains open but its also then not dark until late so.Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you. Anne Lamott
It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?
Please consider buying some pet food and giving it to your local food bank collection or animal charity. Animals aren't to blame for the cost of living crisis.0 -
I tend to light candles rather than have a light on in the evening.1
