Happy new diary! Is your DS1 looking at uni courses?
He did, for about two hours. He isn't academic, and is doing a btec. He will pass it, but very middle of the road, and he has no wish to actually study for another 3/4 years. He likes the idea of the social side of uni I think. Also with the girl being in London, and him being a July baby, i had alresfy daid he would need a gap year, as we absolutely cannot support two at uni for two overlapping years (and he was looking at London too, at a very niche specialist course) so he will probably look for a local apprenticeship. He has a part time job at the golden arches, and they do a pretty decent business apprenticeship, so that is an option, or he may just start working there full time. He is quite motivated financially, so anything that gives him an income looks good to him! And then he can visit his friends whi will go to uni, and get some social time in there, without the debt.

I doubt the wierd one will go to uni, atm his ambition is to be a bus driver, but the smallest is incredibly bright academically when he can cope with the learning, so depending on his secondary and sixth form journey, uni may well be on the cards for him. Probably something like History or English/Creative writing. Or drama/presenting. He certainly has a flair for the dramatic.

  • Blimey, yes, supporting two at uni would be prohibitive!
I love the options they have for apprenticeships these days, definitely the way forward if the chosen career path allows :)

Where I work there are many senior leaders on very good money indeed who didn’t go to university so it’s possible to have a great career without a degree.

Hubby dropped out of uni after a year. He has a very good job and is on decent money. It has just taken him a little longer to get there I think. But it also meant that while the kids were small our shift pattern worked as he wasn't doing long hours in an office.

Was paid today, £200 off the holiday, so that is cleared, will be redirecting £100 a month towards spending money. We are going in August.

£100 off the driving lessons, so total debt now at £1600. Will make sure minimum payments are met on the other cards, but unless I make anything extra that's it until next month.

I need to get the brakes done on my car, so next month may be lighter on the payments. But will keep chipping away at it.

Sounds like you are doing well. Hope the brakes aren't too expensive. High priority though.

Strolling through the week. No spare cash, but I should get some money for my birthday next week. My mum has got me a magazine subscription which I asked for. Unfortunately as it is for cross stitch (which I enjoy, but am very slow at) I now have a long list of new projects, enough to last me years 😆 got hubby to book a play at our local theatre, that's booked in for 28th, and he said we could go out for a meal if I want on my actual birthday. Would be nice, but may just opt for takeaway instead. See how I feel. Our palates are quite different, and I would love to go to a Turkish restaurant in town, not sure he would be able to find anything to eat.

Had to fill up with petrol a bit sooner than I would have liked, took the smallest to a cub weekend so that was about 80miles I didn't anticipate doing this month, I was hoping to be able to share lifts, but no one else I knew was going.

I need to find a bit of cash as I am taking the Brownies to a theatre show next month. Any adult volunteers costs will be covered, but I think us leaders may need to chip in at least half the cost of the tickets.

Anyway I need to go and sew some badges in the smallest cub jumper. Something I absolutely hate doing!

End of the working week. Need to take the smallest to town and get his feet measured, one of his pairs of shoes look very small, although he hasn't been complaining, but may as well go and check. If they have grown, that will be expensive.

Otherwise I have nothing really planned. Just attempting to not spend anything!

At the start of covid (when you couldn't go to shops) I bought one of those foot measurer things from Clarks for like £15.  Game changer.  I can just measure their feet, order a whole load online and send back what's not needed.  Have used it ever since.... kids prefer trying them on at home without the pressure of walking in a line and having to say yes or no after 5 seconds too :) Plus there's more variety when buying online and you can see what's available in their size etc
