Good work. Interesting that UW is cheaper than Octopus for both day and night rates, so every individual customer would be better off with UW (ignoring the SEG rate) whatever their assumed time of use mix. In all other comparisons I can see (apart from the dodgy EDF tariff) if the night time rates are lower the day rates are higher and vice versa. I can't help wondering if Octopus need to check their workings.
    4.7kWp (12 * Hyundai S395VG) facing more or less S + 3.6kW Growatt inverter + 6.5kWh Growatt battery. SE London/Kent. Fitted 03/22 £1,025/kW + battery £2495

  • Thank you! Definitely - in simple terms the cheapest supplier to go with is UW unless your off peak usage is very high, in which case SP are the cheapest. I think they all need to check their workings... this is a massive increase across the board. Obviously this is all based on south east, i'm guessing there will be variations across the regions.

can you sign up for UW without having to take out bundled products like phone plans or whatever? that always put me off as they were overpriced.
Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you. Anne Lamott

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

Please consider buying some pet food and giving it to your local food bank collection or animal charity. Animals aren't to blame for the cost of living crisis.

That might be the issue, if the UW rate is actually lower than the capped calculation because it's subsidised by other utilities. Comparing UW with everyone else though if the low rates's lower the high rate's higher (and vice versa), it's Octopus that stand out.

Yep you can just take their energy and nothing else. If you take their other products then all this does is lower the standing charge (i've checked and tried different ways!) and not the actual price per kw.

  • sorry again! i've updated the EDF rates in the table - so yes if you're on a normal E7 meter then if your off peak usage is anything more than 50% then EDF are cheapest for you in the south east region:

edf0.54970.0679cheapest if off peak usage is 50% or more

I'm just about to migrate to single rate after over 26 years as an E7 customer. That's because I now need over 41% night use and we've always been bubbling just under 30% via the dishwasher, washing machine / dryer and under floor heating. I have nothing else that I can usefully run over night and so will now run these appliances during the day, when convenient to me. So is E7 now solely the reserve of EV / battery owners?

As a general rule I always though to make it worthwhile you had to be nearer 40% of use over night.

When I first adopted E7 the threshold was much lower (~20%). In the pre EV / battery days (1990's) the idea was to tempt most families to run the washing machine / dryer and dishwasher overnight. If you didn't have gas (which we do) heat your water tank and your storage radiators too. We have around 7.5 kWs of UFH so we would use the last hour of E7 to neutralise the floors Nov - Feb inc, however UFH would be switched off May - Sep inc. As the threshold has slowly moved up inertia has kept us on E7 however at 41% that last straw has broken the camel's back, for us. What we'll be interested in is how many will migrate like we will and how much load will that shift to the day?
