Anyway my question is, are octopus allowed to charge 50% more than the government maximum?
can you share a copy of your bill with the personal details scribbled out?

but back of an envelope and not seeing what's actually on the bill its not 50% more.

    811*0.34=275.74
    plus standing charge of 0.46*31 = 14.26
    plus 5% vat = 14.50
    = £
    304.50

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

  • Standing charge is 42p a day. I didn't add that on to simplify matters. Looking again the bill is for Nov and Dec. But it is the price per KWH that I am worried about
  • Correction it is variable not fixed.  I'm sure they will reply to me. I am cancelling the direct debit until they do.

thats a bad idea as it means your cost per unit will immediately jump as you will lose your dd discount. and you might be charged penalties if you dont pay the full bills on demand (no spreading the cost with monthly dd's)

i would say again its best if you can share a picture of your bill so we can help work out what the problem actually is.

Are Octopus really still working to Avro's tariffs, 15 months after they went bust?
I don't think it's an Avro tariff.  "Flexible Avro" is the initial tariff Octopus switched it's Avro SoLR customers too.  I think over time it just became an SVR capped tariff, and then obviously an EPG tariff.

OP needs to provide more billing information as has been requested by a number of posters to see if their bill looks like @pscotty's or not.... Octopus charge at the tariff rate but then discount it back to the EPG.

So you have that line with that sum, then a line underneath that says 811 kWh @ 17p and takes that off. Then adds the standing charge and vat. I imagine you can now see that bit.

    no.

what they are doing is charging you the full rate for your electric according to your tarrif as if there was no discount. THEN working out how much your discount should be (17p*the amount used) and removing it from the bill.

the same as in a shop if your receipt shows the full price for the items then at the bottom takes off a voutcher or something youve used as a discount.

that means when the discount ends or changes they just need to is change that line for everyone. not change every customer's tarrif.
