I seem to have started something here...! I'm on the nightshift tonight as there wasn't any Marie Curie nurse available or booked. I'll be a zombie tomorrow, but still have to be here at meal/meds times. I might catch a couple of hours here and there.
Our older daughter bought us a notebook each a good few years ago, then texted us questions each week to write the answers in our books, so she'd have some idea of our lives growing up. It was quite a trip down Memory Lane.2025 Fashion on the ration

2 t-shirts = 8 coupons

I hope you and your Dad have a peaceful night, @MrsCD. What a good idea about your Memory Lane notebooks.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
The sun's been out and I think I’m solar powered (Onebrokelady)

2024: Trainers 5, dress 7, slippers 5, 2 prs socks (gift) 2, 3 prs white socks 3, t-shirts x 2 10, 6 prs socks: mostly gifts 6, duvet set 7.5 = 45.5/68 coupons
20.5 coupons used in 2020. 62.5 used in 2021. 94.5 remaining as of 21/3/225 -
A spend of 1.5 coupons on a bralette, which it turns out is a cross between a normal bra and a sports bra, who knew? I spent the grand sum of £2.99 in Aldi and it's by far the most comfortable undergarment I've ever worn. If they still have them next week I'll definitely get another. DD, who is more well endowed than me in the chest arena, reckons it wouldn't work for her but I'm very happy with my purchase.
In the hunt for a posh(ish) frock for DGD's wedding I found just the thing in the local hospice charity shop but £40 !!!!!!! Needless to, the search continues.7 -

Your daughter's idea is brilliant. I only wish I'd thought of it while my parents were alive.Nonnadiluca said:A spend of 1.5 coupons on a bralette, which it turns out is a cross between a normal bra and a sports bra, who knew? @Nonnadiluca, while this is a moneysaving site, if it's the perfect dress for the wedding and you can afford to pay £40 for it, then buy it. You'll only regret it, if you don't. And £40 is nothing compared to what it would have cost new.

I was thinking of you, @MrsCD - I hope your Dad is going on as well as can be expected...
The reason I was thinking of you was that - firstly, she is fine! - yesterday teatime my octogenarian Mum fell the full length of the main stairs at their house, about 22 foot, and tumbling with it, as she started at the top facing forwards to walk down and ended right at the very bottom, facing upwards with her legs up the stairs. Dad could have dialled 999 for an ambulance, or called their GP's out-of-hours service, or called the NHS phoneline, or phoned their niece who is a GP, or phoned their other niece who is a GP and is married to a GP, but no, they phoned their daughter who never even got a First Aid Badge at Guides...
I did my best but felt very uncomfortable at their refusal to consider medical help... I impressed upon them a few signs that they really really shouldn't ignore, and in fact that led in the end to her being thoroughly checked over, and thank heavens no major injury despite two stunningly-dark black eyes that developed over the evening yesterday! Hurrah for the NHS phoneline and its senior nurses, hurrah for the paramedics who came to the house at midnight, hurrah for them deciding they thought she was probably ok but given the extent of the tumbling fall and her age, best to check, and hurrah for the hospital... they got home just before 6am with a clean bill of health for her, and I've spoken with them today.
I am terribly glad she has been properly examined.... but parents, eh?
Love to you, Mrs CD, and I hope you have a particularly enjoyable weekend with your dad x2025 remaining: 37 coupons from 66:

Glad your mum isn't seriously injured Laura, but worrying all the same.
MrsCD, hope things are as good as they can be.
Pip, maybe you're right about the dress, it is a special occasion after all, but I m having trouble with the thought of paying £40 for a second hand dress that I'll only wear once. I bought a dress in another charity shop, the same sort of new price , about £120, for £15 and that still had the tags on. I think the other thing making me hesitate is that I have until the end of August to find something, although I know that will be here all too soon.6 -
Oh gosh Laura - scary, and especially when you can’t get there to see for yourself. Well done on persuading them to get advice. I’m glad to hear your mum is ok despite this - she must be tough!Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.4

@Laura_Elsewhere, your mum's escapades brought to mind my mum having a fall and being helped up by well-meaning neighbours. A few weeks later she turned over in bed and her hip broke. I wish they had been knowledgeable enough to call for help instead of trying to lift her (though she might well have refused), as the hospital (where she was when the break happened) were bewildered and couldn't understand how it happened till I explained about the fall. So while calling GPs makes sense and would have taken some of the stress off you, they obviously trust your judgement and their trust paid off because you did the right things.
Do keep a look out for signs of concussion - tiredness, nausea, dizziness etc. (I'm sure you know this!) When I got concussion a few months ago, I thought I was tired because I'd been up till stupid o'clock, but with hindsight and other symptoms, it was part of the concussion. There's loads on it on the NHS website, to save you going back to Guides for that first aid course.
What a scare for you all. As Polly says, a tough lady. I suppose once you reach 80, people must have a certain resilience, but it's not easy on those who see it demonstrated. Get well soon, black-eyed lady.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

Hi all,
@Laura_Elsewhere glad to hear your Mum is ok. My Dad did a similar thing. On the night of his retirement do he'd got up to go to the bathroom and missed his step. Luckily I was at home and heard him. He was laying at the bottom of the stairs insisting he had broken his neck. I had to pull my coat on over my nighty to run to the corner phone box to call the ambulance. When I got back there he was back upstairs getting dressed! Apparently you can't go to the hospital in your pjs! I had to wake my Mum up to tell her what had happened and we all spent the rest of the night in a + e. As you have probably guessed Dad had imbibed a few glasses of laughing juice and kept the nurses giggling all night with his jokes but he was fine. The Dr said he probably would have hurt himself more if he had been sober. As you said . Parents
Take care everyone7
