Take Your Lunch to Work- January 2023

  • Thanks @outoftheviciouscircle :)

I work in the office twice a week and from home three days a week. It can be easy to justify buying lunch and a hot drink when I'm in the office because "I don't do it everyday" ... but I noticed that it was creeping up to £7 a day which is over £650 a year! I also hope that bringing my own lunch on my office days will help me eat a bit healthier when I'm working from home too.
  • We make 5, 3 kids, myself and husband.  It gets very samey with sandwih s all the time so for a change we have cocktail sausage, crackers, cheese, pasta salad, salad, wraps, sausage rolls, pizza.  Hope that helps xx

I'm making a pasta bake for dinner this evening and have made extra so that there will be left overs for both myself and DH tomorrow.

This challenge used to run monthly up until a couple of years ago and I always found it very motivating. Its all too easy to think, I'll just buy a meal deal at lunch time and gone are the days them meal deals cost £3. They are much nearer £4 now.
Between myself and DH we are spending close to £40 a week to eat lunch. More often than not, a sandwich that really isn't that tasty or particularly healthy. Spread that over the year and we are looking at a staggering £1800.
I really need to cut back this year and pay off some debt before my mortgage repayments potentially increase in December 2023, so I am going to post to this thread daily to keep me motivated. If anyone wants to join in along the way then I'd appreciate the company and motivation.

Yes please! I have been quite good the last few months - prior to that, I either wouldn't eat or would spend a stupid amount, one or the other of those two bad things!

I only work onsite 3 days per week, so I should be able to manage to make 3 lunches though, eh?!

Tins of tuno mayo might help. Buy a pack of three of those and a pack of rolls, they don't need a fridge and with the mayo in, can get away without butter - you could throw in a tomato to that which doesn't need a fridge either.

I'm always in it, it's only the depth that varies....

    Current debt: £10,806.75
Debt free date April 2025 (though expecting this to come forward)

  • Count me in. I only work 2 day shifts a week where I need lunch. the other shifts being later but I must start taking a snack and a flask of coffee those days. If I nip out for a coffee and a snack it’s normally about £7 odds sometimes more so I’ll need to get organised.
    I'm not a muggle...I'm just magically challenged

Oh I like that idea, I definitely need to look at alternatives. I've bought pot noodles for next week. I just need to remember to take a fork with me. I hate using the ones from the staff facilities.

Realising the little things I can and need to cut back on is really motivating me.

Oh wow £7 a day, it really does make you think when you look at the bigger picture.

I work from home at least 2/3 days a week so am definitely going to do this. I have a soup kettle so it's really easy for me to take soup.  I'll make a bit of extra dinner and take leftovers for lunch. My biggest issue is remembering to actually take it with me...🙈

Thats my DH all over. I make him lunch and he doesn't take it.
Left overs was what I always used to take when I had a job where I came home every night. It's not an option for my DH  now as I think he lives off frozen pizzas and chicken burgers while I''m away in the week.

  • Can I join? I was really good at this when paying off my debts and I've really slipped. Its sheer disorganisation on my part but its not good for my bank account or waistline.
