Wanting to replace 16 year old boiler

We have had a quote from BG to replace the boiler. We mostly want to replace it because it usually breaks down every year (we have boiler care but it does cost a £100 excess), it may save us a lot with today’s fuel bills, and BG were offering 5 year interest free loan.
Does anyone have any experience with BG replacement and financing? It seems like a good deal as we don’t have the cash to hand to pay for replacement. We could hopefully save with a more efficient boiler.
But are we paying an inflated price to get the “free” interest? Are BG boiler installation and unit prices competitive? Is there more competitive prices that also offer interest free?

  • How much was the quote? What boiler are they supplying? How bigs your house?

……and yes you are paying for the ‘interest free credit’ and the adverts and the big company overheads etc etc.

Get a couple of quotes from local independents and then save up and buy it next summer, you’ll save far more than the £100 it’s going to cost you if it breaks down.

British Gas tend to be more expensive.

Depending on the installation you could save 25% or more by using others.

Get some other quotes, ideally from independent local traders with a good reputation, BG have awful reviews.

You'll likely save much more than the interest by going elsewhere but perhaps a 0% purchase credit card could provide a 0% option (so long as you definitely pay the card off before the offer period ends).

Typically 40% more expensive than a local independent GSR RGI. Use an independent who is certified for your preferred brand and borrow the cash from a third party as required.
You'll also get a better quality of install, as he'll be wanting to do the warranty service for the next 6 years or more. The BG RGI could be a subbie from anywhere, and you'll never see him again.
If your boiler was installed after 1/4/05, which it seems it is, then it'll be a condensing boiler, so relatively efficient. Before that date, it may be non-condensing, much less so. Which is it?
If you keep the old one, drop the policy and self-insure. That £100 will pay for the annual service.

Have a look at online suppliers such as warmzilla and boxt. They supply and fit.
Some boilers carry a 10 year warranty, as long as you have it serviced every year, this could be done by a local company.

& if you do replace the boiler also upgrade the controls at the same time - they will usually pay for themselves or more over the life of the boiler.

Another vote for Boxt - they are owned by Worcester Bosch and give a fixed price before you order. I used them as a lone female in a house I didn’t want to risk being taken for a fool plus all online was easy to deal with.

Thanks for all the ideas. It is a condensing boiler. House is a 4 bed detached. The quote is for 3655. all installed with Hive active controls.

    What does self-insure mean please?
  • I did an online quote at Boxt and it came out £500 more expensive than my local installer for the same boiler specification but then they are an added layer to the installation process so it is to be expected I suppose.

They certainly aren't owned by Worcester Bosch.
